Fantastic book
What a lovely diverse book. Not only great for maths but also for learning about African market.

So good I bought it twice
I love to read books with characters that look like my boys and lately I’ve been noticing that many of the board books we’ve bought or received about black children have been about racism or wider equality issues. However, this book was fun and joyous and my 1 year olds love it when I read it to them using their names rather than baby. I love the illustrations and also we are able to use the book to practice counting, as the story allows for counting of different market products. We love this book so much I bought a second copy.

Charming and Lovely
This is a very lovely book set in a busy Nigerian market (deciphered from my understanding of particular visual and cultural cues, although a specific location is not mentioned in the text). The illustrations are beautiful, joyful, and bright. It follows mama and her baby as they go shopping in market. The illustrator could have, perhaps, found another few shade of brown for some of the characters to reflect the true phenotypical diversity of West Africa. Every single character has the exact same brown colour in the book! Nevertheless, this simple plot charmed my 2 year old and it has become a firm favourite.

Paperback and board books texts differ
We have had the board book for some time and my 2.5yo loves it. I enjoy reading it to him, as do his older sisters. The text is very simple and there is so much to see and chat about in the pictures. Then I bought the paperback version for a friend's child, for their birthday, and I'm surprised to see that the text is different from the board book. I have included two photos for comparison. These are the main differences:The names of the market traders are in the paperback version. In the paperback version, the baby is given characteristics, which are the reasons he is given things by the market traders eg baby is curious, baby is funny etc. Unfortunately, baby is also naughty. I'm not keen on this, as the traders give the things to baby *because* he is funny/sorry/curious, rather than just giving them. For me this takes away from the story a bit! In the board book, it just says 'Baby loves bananas, baby loves bananas so much that the man selling bananas gives baby six bright bananas'.The paperback version says 'Mama does not notice, she is too busy buying chili peppers/rice/etc' which is omitted in the board book (it is told through the pictures). There are a few other lines in the paperback, which are not included in the board book, such as 'Mama thinks her sweet baby must be hungry by now' and 'we need to get home quick and fast!'All in all, we love this book!

A lovely colourful book and cheerful tale!
This is a beautifully illustrated book, with a lovely story of the small child and his mother at the busy market. My only personal issue with this book (and reason for 4 instead of 5 stars) is I find the text too busy and distractingly placed on each page, when the beautiful illustrations tell the story so well! I find it distracts my 20 month old and it’s a shame.

ALBO ILLUSTRATO MERAVIGLIOSO

I'm looking forward to buying this book again :D
I checked out the board book from the library with my toddler. I was immediately attracted to the pictures when I opened it and it quickly became my toddler's favorite. She'd always ask me to read "baby market." It easily gets read to her 4 times a day at least and I have it memorized when I need to recite it out loud in the car while stuck in traffic. After returning it, I knew I had to buy it.I was also pleased to learn that the board book differs from the larger book. I think the simpler language of the board book is good for my kiddo's level and not too overwhelming. I'm looking forward to getting the hardcover when she's a little older since it will allow her to view the story a little differently.
