Gardening with Chickens: Plans and Plants for You and Your Hens Kindle Edition

I have recently bought maybe a dozen or so homesteading books with the hopes of getting a plan in my head for my own small homestead. We’re house shopping this year and it’s hard to figure out what you’re looking for if you don’t know what your building. This book was the best one of the group by far, by like a factor of ten. It does basic garden, basic chicken, basic structuring, basic compost, and covers how to begin marrying them all together. For instance, after reading this book I know I would build independent gardens for each season so that the chickens could have their way with the out of season gardens to help aerate the soil and remove pests. I also know that growing herbs around the chickens will help keep away pests and keep the chickens entertained. And I never would have thought about growing watermelon to give the chickens during summer if this book hadn’t told me chickens love them.There are other books that cover each individual topic in more depth; to be sure. But if you are a beginner and you’re looking at how to start a functional combination, I can’t imagine there is a better book out there.

I love all of the photos. I was hoping that this would encourage me to somehow keep my chickens in the garden. But this book has actually convinced me that it is probably much easier to just keep them out. The book actually talks a lot about how to keep the chickens out of the garden. With fencing and different tactics and seems to explain that the most logical and easy way to incorporate chickens in the garden is in the fall after harvest in the spring before planting. Does contain a lot of useful information regarding how to garden plants that your chicken can't eat as supplements. And also includes items that you should not feed your chickens.

This book is excellent! I am not that great at gardening and need all the advice I can get. This book has really helped me plan my garden this year and in a way that benefits my chickens as well. What more could I want?

This book is so awesome. I live in an apartment and this book has my dream of having chickens becoming even more desired and real. The pictures are incredible. I love the set up of the information. The author has great knowledge and gives it to you in a way that is not overwhelming and actually comforting to me as a not yet started-beginner with chickens. I can't wait to put this book into action.

Simple texts with awesome information and simple/sustainable ideas.After having tried to learn from other texts, this book proved raising chicken can be simple and ecological.

This writer seems to really love her chickens and it also seems that she has large and varied gardens in which to keep them which is of great advantage to the reader as she comes up with very many different ideas of how to keep them healthy and happy within the great balance with the various needs of the garden too. And beautiful photos on top of that! Once you pick this book up you don't want to put it down till you read it all. You can read it in one day and it will enrich your chicken keeping knowledge greatly.

Bought all 3 of Lisa Steeles books. Although some information is repeated I found all had something helpful to offer. If your new to chicken keeping or have had your girls a while they are great reference books on health, house keeping and feeding your flock in a natural way. My girls love the breakfast Lisa has devised. Great books love them.

Love this book. Lots of great ideas for the garden as well as the chucks. Cant wait to get cracking. Bought another for my friend.
