The author starts off by providing you some key points with a detailed guide on how to use the book to ensure you make the best out of the book. I am pleased by how the type font and layout is very easy on the eye which makes it easy for the reader to easily assimilate. There are 42 sets with 5 sections in each set consisting of Synonyms, Filling blank spaces, Antonyms, Missing letters, and Idioms/ Homophones & Homographs. Answers are provided at the back of the book for reference. The reader is guided to use no more than 10 mins on each section, which I believe is a very good way to prep for the exam because it will also be timed. It gives the child the opportunity to practice and prepare for the real deal. The actual number of difficult words a child may come across in this book are much more than 1400, and all targeted at the right level. I would highly recommend this book for a child preparing for their 11+ exams.

Slightly perturbing when the book you are getting for your 9 year old is partly about a bit of English you've never heard of - Cloze certainly wasn't anything I ever did at school - but this is not too advanced for him and he's slowly working his way through the exercises which are varied and usually have good examples he can learn from.

This book by Jerome K contains 1400 words that will frequently crop up in the 11 plus exams. It gives excellent exam study advice, for short 10-minute bursts of exam preparation and ways to try to recall the words. It is full of interactive exercises that make it a like a fun puzzle book for students, so that they will enjoy it so much, they may be unaware that they’re also learning and becoming ready to take their 11+. I tutor students in English, and this book has been an invaluable resource – I’ve found it’s useful to have a dictionary to hand, so that students can look up the meanings of words. If you’re a tutor or parent, I can’t recommend it enough! It contains synonyms, antonyms, homophones, homographs and idioms.

From the introduction, the book gives some useful advice on how to make your study more effective. One of the main tips you can find here is that short periods of regular study are more effective than long irregular sessions, something that is important for my eldest child and me. Every set contains exercises to help you practise on synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs, and at the end of the book, you will find the correct answers and words explanations. ''11 + Vocabulary'' would also be a useful resource for anyone, including adults, looking to refresh their vocabulary knowledge.

This book contains 43 x 10 minute tests of difficult vocabulary with all answers and some explanations at the back. Do make sure your child already has a high level of literacy if attempting this - it's daunting enough for an educated 49 year old let alone a 10-year-old. The book requires lots of extra time input from the parent/educator to support in the child in the necessary follow up work. Also, a decent adult-level dictionary (we started with Collins School Dictionary - which is otherwise great - but quickly moved to the massive Collins). Before buying this book I think there are 3 main points to consider: - Did the author (and publisher: Express Education Limited) of this book draw their material from past 11+ tests and if not where have they sourced their content? I am not familiar with the above mentioned company in this field, no credentials are offered on the cover or inside the book, and it does not appear to be supported/approved by any UK educational body. If it is, then this needs to be displayed clearly on or in the book. - Should a book - which is supposed to prepare the student for an exam in British English (the 11+ is, after all, only taken in the UK) - solely test the American English equivalents of words like: "garbage" (not "rubbish"), "fall" (not "autumn"), "cranky" (not "grumpy")? - In the 11+, are the children really going to be tested on words like "maladroit", "gaucheness", "egregious", "piddling", imperturbability", "nadir", "acme", "extol", "aplomb"? And these are from the first 2 tests only! Yes, you'll need to reach for the dictionary too (who's really being tested here?) - unless perhaps you are Frasier or Niles Crane ..... My child and I are only 3 tests in, and there's no doubt they are encountering mountains of vocabulary here and are being tested on them in a consistent (though relentless) way. We are keeping a notebook with new words and definitions following the sensible (though minimal) advice at the beginning of the book. I would just like to make you aware of the Mount Parnassus that this book is, and also that you should make sure your child also learns the Brit equivalent of any US vocab.
