Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based – and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition. Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology – and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-read for parents – and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain. Scattered Minds : - Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay - Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy – and why - Shows how ‘distractibility’ is the psychological product of life experience - Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours - Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood - Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

A good read
This book is helpful for any ADHDer adult or any parent of a child with ADHD to truly understand how their symptoms manifest in different areas of their life. The author also, without placing blame on anyone, explains how these symptoms are related to the attachment styles each of us grew up with in our childhood homes.

Great book!
Great book. I think ot will be very helpful for ADD diagnosed people. I don't have ADD, but still read the book to understand how early ages of life shapes our brain, and this book tremendously explains about that a lot .

A healing book
Just reading this book triggered a whole path of healing within me. Written with compassion and immense experience in dealing with patients with ADD, the author is able to connect the list of ADD symptoms with its debilitating effects on life in wide variety of ways, with real life examples. What I found very helpful was his exploration of how the development of the brain is affected by the environment in the growing years and what truly makes us susceptible to ADD. And when you get down to the bottom of it, you realise that root cause isn’t a weakness at all. At the end of this exploration, he shares key areas to focus on (irony unintended) in order to grow and heal the deficiencies and also how to choose what treatment works best (and not what to choose). Grateful for the wisdom.

A must for ANY parent
This book is a revelation for me in many aspects , Though familiar with Mate’s work via another book on When the Body says No , here I like how he has weaves in parenting aspects that could help both the child and parent . It doesn’t matter if your child is diagnosed with ADD or not , this is a gem for any parent

Scattered Minds
This book was a real eye-opener. I realized that what I thought was just nervous behavior was actually ADD, and I deeply resonated with the part about always being late. Gabor Maté explains ADD with such compassion that it made me feel truly understood.

Fantástico!!
Este livro foi um divisor de águas na minha formação médica e humanista! Acima de tudo, enfatiza o contraponto entre o contexto de formação do ser humano e o atual a ser construído.

You owe it to yourself to read it.
This book is (by some considered) the controversial book “Scattered Minds” by Gabor Maté (1999). It’s about the origin and healing/how to deal with of ADHD, where he argues that it’s not only genetics that are a cause for ADHD, but also how environmental factors (already starting as early as in the womb - this not an attempt to blame the mother btw!) can be contributing to the development of ADHD. It is one of the first books that considered this angle and it would be interesting to see what new research will have to say about it. It’s definitely far more nuanced than the “haters” say about it, typically hyper fixating on one sentence instead of considering the message of the book as a whole. When reading it I’d recommend you to keep an open mind and acknowledge what resonates to be true to you based on your own situation and history. This book was recommended to me by my therapist to better understand the condition for what it is as a whole, as I have long suspected having ADHD myself (as well as ASD, but I am still on the waiting list for that), in particular after noticing how perimenopause amplified traits that are classic for this condition and present in me, but overlooked in me my whole life, as ADHD presents differently in girls & women. I was finally professionally diagnosed with it in August 2024 at the tender age of 53.
