Can this be used under a toaster for on top of the microwave?

No. I don't think you could use this under Toaster , its better to use only as decor or Accent and its ok. to use it on top of microwave

Will the marble surface melt if you put a hot pan on it?

I have not tried it, but I would not risk it. It does not seem to me like they can tolerate hot pans.

Why is there a max of 6 placemats (3 sets of 2)? Can I order 4 sets of 2? We need 8 for our table.

How well do the rose gold oval placemats hold up with continued use?

I don't have the rose gold I have the other ones but I have to tell you they are extremely durable. I have mine on end tables and there are remotes, cups etc etc on and off them all the time and they are in mint condition.
