Hopkins: Poems (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets Series)

Hopkins has been my favorite poet for years. I love his lilting language, the use of alliteration , and his vivid images. This book is small, neat, and able to be put into my purse to carry with me. Yet, the writing is readable with plenty of white space on the page.

imho, the deepest cuts into the core of beauty are the great gift of Hopkins' poetic writing. I love the way his words open my mind and heart to God through the beauty of creation.

Many of my all time favorite poems coupled with some hard to find prose in the back. " `Some find me a sword; some The flange and the rail; flame, Fang, or flood' goes Death on drum, And storms bugle his fame. But we dream we are rooted in earth--Dust! Flesh falls within sight of us, we, though our flower the same, Wave with the meadow, forget that there must The sour scythe cringe, and the blear share come."

As usual the Gerard Manley Hopkins selection by the editors of the Everyman's Library Pocket Poets does not disappoint. This book of Hopkin's poetry, letters and prose is a delightful and well thought out collection of one of England's finest pre-modern transcendent religious writers, with the wisdom to correspond with insight and wit about writing poetry. Another poet to add to my growing collection which now includes Shakespeare, Rilke, and others. Hats off and kudos to Alfred A. Knopf for continuing to produce these gems. Thank you Amazon for providing an essentialy new copy at a discount price!

I was disappointed that Hopkins' poem, "Rosa Mystica," was not included. That makes me wonder what else is missing. Other than that it's a well printed edition.

the book arrived very quickly - looks like new and is a great compilation of a beloved poet. Recommended.

Brings the music of the language to life.

Great carrying size. Comes on my waalks with me most days. Has all of Hopkins major work and Deitschland in full. Nice selection of notes and letters, too.
