" The spreader is designed for spreading fertilizer, seeds, grit, salt and winter grit." So yes it should be suitable for sand distribution . Pay particular attention to getting the spreader setting correct for the particle size of sand in use. ( see section 5.3 of instruction leaflet).

Has anyone used this as a spreader for winter grit/salt? Is it any good as a gritter/spreader?

I have not used it to spread salt but the spreader has the ability to take various size granules because the holes can be adjusted. The spreader should be ok to spread salt unless the granules are rather large.

Can this one be used for thin lawn top dressing a 70/30 Sand Soil mix after seeding?

I have only used it to lay paving sand onto artificial grass. As long as the materials are dry I would imagine it would be fine.

exactly how do you stop seed or fertilizer coming out at the end of a run?

When the wheels stop revolving the seed/fertilizer stops dropping out. There is no additional control. I usually lift the unit slightly in the air and twist at the same time at the end of the run. Much less fussy than more conventional models.
