Desert Fox: The Storied Military Career of Erwin Rommel

Great Overview of Rommel’s Life and Career
Having read several of Mitcham’s books, I expected a very readable account of the life and career of the Desert Fox. Especially for someone who wants an introduction to Rommel, the Afrika Korps, and a military Account of the first half of the twentieth century, this would be an excellent book. The book is packed with anecdotes and notes surrounding the figures with whom Rommel interacted in his life, which added a more personal touch to this work than is often seen in Rommel biographies. If there is a downside to the book, it is that there is precious little to introduce in a Rommel biography that is new to serious students. That being said, this is a highly readable, enjoyable overview that I would recommend to anyone who wants to learn about Rommel, or who needs a refresher.

Excellent!
I didn't know much about Erwin Rommel and I learned a lot from this book. This is a great book to read for someone with any interest in the North African and European Theaters of World War II. The book held my interest very well and kept me wanting to read more.

Dr. Samuel Mitcham brings Erwin Rommel to life.
As in previous exemplary works, Dr. Samuel Mitcham effectively analyzes a controversial military leader. Mitcham argues that insufficient supplies and incompetent interference from Axis leaders in Berlin and Rome caused Rommel's defeats in North Africa and France. Unlike most American historians who write from the Allied point of view, Desert Fox presents World War II through the eyes of the German field marshal--which gives the reader a more thorough understanding of the worst conflict in human history. Mitcham's book is quite readable and well worth it!

He fought the Allies and der Fuhrer
Dr. Mitcham gives the reader a view not just of the military commander but Rommel as a human being. A man who refused the direct order of der Fuhrer to kill Jewish POWs. A general who had to fight better equipped opponents and a command structure that refused to listen to the logic of military necessity on the ground. After reading Dr. Mitcham's book you will feel like you know Rommel as a person as well as a military leader.
