Can you take the cover off to wash?

No you throw the whole thing through the wash. It does great though.

Will this dog mat be too bulky in an homemade type dog sleeping bag? I want to see if its better than a bulky pillow insert.

It won't be bulky as it is not fluffy or stuffed type of bed. It is super soft, and is more like a thin layer of comfort for the dogs to lie on. See the images in the reviews and you will have good idea about it.

Why are these shorter than the title says? 24" length means it's 24", not 23". all of your titles are misleading about actual size
