Wonderful!
This is my first time using peat pellets and I am marveled at how wonderful they are. They arrive in a very small package and take up almost no space but they allow you to start so many new plants! In my case I got the 100-pack and started 100 seedlings. Only 2 days later and many of them are already popping out. After you hydrate the pellets they grow and expand but they each stay contained because there is a fine cloth around each one keeping it together. On one of the sides of the expanded pellet you will find an opening (not covered by the cloth) where you can make a small hole and put in your seeds. They are so easy to use and so effective. I will be getting a bigger pack next time!

Great product if it's exactly what you need
These pellets/plugs turned out to be both sort of (but not quite) what I was expecting and not quite what I needed. The listing information wasn't very detailed, so I gambled a bit when I made the purchase, thinking I could adapt if necessary. As it turned out, i did have to adapt because the disks aren't quite as large as I hoped (so I had to use more than one to fill my little pots) AND each pellet is individually wrapped in a light gauze to keep the peat together. These are PERFECT for multi-compartment seed flats, but not for what I needed (so I'm having to cut the gauze to let it split as the peat soaks up moisture). I will definitely use these again for actual seed plantings, but if you need to fill a larger pot, you might want to look for loose peat or larger peat circles.

Super easy, use hot water to hydrate pellets
Exactly what we needed! Rehydrates best in as hot of water as your tap will put out. So nice to have a 100 count option to buy. Seeds germinated crazy fast in these with a grow light seed starter. We sprinkled cinnamon on top of each pellet after hydrating and planting seeds. Cinnamon is a natural mold inhibitor. Hopefully it works! So far, no mold!

My experience with these seed starting pellets. Compared to other Jiffy seed starters I tried, these are very inferior.
I bought these Jiffy Peat Pellets from Amazon on February 25, 2013. At that time I payed 13.38. Shortly after I bought these pellets, I began planting seeds for the spring season. After my seeds sprouted, I wrote a pretty good review about these pellets. However, after comparing plant success with these pellets to other Jiffy pellets, I found these pellets to be exceptionally inferior. It is now April 23, 2013. My seedlings are now mature "young adults" and most are happy. The seeds planted in these pellets, however, are not doing as well as they could. I'll write about what I believe to be pro and cons, and you be the judge. PRO: CONVENIENT. You can't beat the convenience of having these pellets delivered right to your door. CON: THESE PELLETS ARE WAY OVER PRICED. You can get a Jiffy Professional Greenhouse 72 pellet set from Home Depot for 6.98 (I just verified the price today). CON: THESE PELLETS CANNOT ACCOMMODATE LARGER SEEDLINGS. My young seedlings of larger plants were cramped from the very beginning. Lettuce seeds and other small seeds are really the only type of seed that these pellets can reasonably accommodate. CON: MOISTURE RETENTION EXTREMES. These pellets are a nightmare of extremes when it comes to watering. They absorb water very quickly and immediately become soggy (you want moist, not soggy). Soggy roots means risk of rotting roots. Soggy seed starters also mean extreme risk of rotting seeds. Many of my seeds that take longer to germinate (nasturtiums in particular), simply rotted before they even sprouted roots. At the other extreme, these pellets dry out quickly. You really have to keep on top of them to avoid super thirsty seedlings. CON: MATERIAL WRAPPED AROUND PEAT IS VERY HARD TO TEAR. The gauzy material holding the pellets together takes a great deal of effort to tear. When tearing back this material to expose the pellet tops (so you can plant), the material is stubborn to tear. Also, forget about planting these pellets directly into soil without removing this material. If you don't remove this material, your seedlings' roots will have a VERY hard time piercing through to your soil. I have tried two alternatives to these Jiffy pellets. Surprisingly, these alternatives are also Jiffy brand pellets. The inconsistency of Jiffy products is very annoying. The first improved product I tried was Ferry Morse Seed Co 5272 Jiffy Professional Greenhouse . As I mentioned earlier, the 72 pellet size is available from Home Depot for 6.98 (I bought them on 3/12/2013). Buying from Home Depot makes this product reasonably priced (I was really burned up when I found out the price of the Home Depot Jiffy pellets vs. the price of these Amazon Jiffy pellets). The Home Depot Jiffy pellets easily support larger plants and moisture retention is adequate. The material wrapping these pellets is just as hard to tear as the material wrapping the pellets I am now reviewing. The second improved product, and VERY BEST I TRIED, was Jiffy 5032 Professional Greenhouse 25-Plant Starter Kit . I bought these from Lowe's on 4/12/2013 for 5.49 (for only 25 pellets). (UPDATE 5/3/2013: Home Depot now advertises these on their website for 4.99.) The growing medium in these pellets is rich and dark. These pellets beautifully support larger plants and water retention is even and easy to keep on top of. The material wrapping these pellets is made from recycled plastic and is super easy to tear when you mean to tear it. Plant roots will have no problem piercing through to the soil. As I said earlier, all of these pellets are Jiffy brand. The inconsistent quality of Jiffy pellets amazes me. I'll end by saying: You really must shop around for the best price. Of course, buying from Amazon is the best route if you need products conveniently delivered to your door. QUICK SEED STARTING TIP: My daughter and I found that a turkey baster is excellent for watering seedlings gently and precisely. UPDATE 6/7/2013: When transplanting, I forgot to removed the netting from one of the pellets in which I had planted "Shades of Blue" Larkspur Seeds . The poor plant is doing terribly (stunted). It cannot push its roots through the netting and I fear that if I dig it up, it will die. I recommend that it you use these pellets, be sure to remember to remove the netting before transplanting your seedlings.
