Maybe better for older children
Give the ants some time to warm up. Money wise it's great if you need a quick solution on ants. Ants are harmless as long as you don't do anything they deem threatening pretty safe. It's easy to get them to their farm. Kit comes with ants of course. A mini guide on feeding them. And what drinks they need. And a link if more food is needed. For me it's fun as an adult but for children not so much. So once the fun is done expect children to lose interest in it very fast.

All but 4 dead on arrival!
I ordered these for my daughter for our new gel ant farm last week, they were not supposed to be here until closer to her birthday, but they hot here sooner, after paying for ants ($7) and even more for shipping ($8), which they were only mailed 1st class USPS not overnight or even priority, which at that postal rate, it should have been priority, they were received in a bubble envelope, so nothing to protect them from cold or heat, they say they guarentee them during that 7 day period, but weather changes and the heat of inside a mail truck for days!!! Come on, really, so mine got here early, so the weather guarentee doesn't even apply here based off the supposed delivery date because you first can't rely on weather reports 2 weeks in advance, which is what I was expecting, but it got here today, so over a week early, so how was I supposed to predict the weather everywhere they are traveling in between the 2000 mile journey of the address in WA state???? YOU CAN'T!! IT'S NOT LOGICAL!! AND all but 4 were dead. The rest were just pieces and parts of ant bodies, so either they ate each other or they got shaken around so hard they fell apart! Not the way you should ship them, if it's in the summer or winter. Nor should you have to pay $8 for a $1 shipping first class USPS cost. They also need to put VENOMOUS right up top on order details. Now the ants I bought last week now cost over $26 now plus shipping, that's more than $1 per ant, at that price they better be overnighted with a refrigerated pak.

Awsome
Ok, I thought ours were all dead. Nope! I didn't let them defrost enough. Ants are very interesting to my daughter. She is very pleased, I am very pleased and they are already something cool to watch as a family. They have moved their food, their unalive, and have checked out the water source. We even have seen them check the sand to start digging.

Not a dead one in the tube
They arrived at my house, very lively, and we’re not even close to being dead. I’ve had them almost 4 months and they are still going strong.

It was a massacre
Preface this disaster, I want to note that it was a nice fall day when my ants arrived in the mail, and I actually was outside as the postman handed me the package- there was no time for us to commit this heinous act of ant catastrophe. We have owned 3 (yes I said 3) ant colonies- all of which have led to the death of over 60 ants..... I was found guilty of the first two colonies. I am innocent on colony number 3. Colony number 1 (Alone in the Desert)- This was the ant farm where you had to purchase the sand.. and remember to water them .. and feed them....... I did not remember to water and feed them, thus they starved. Colony number 2 (Psychedelic Blue Lunar Craft)- This any farm was made of the blue gel and had a color-changing light at the bottom. The gel served as the water and food, and the ants tunneled through it. It was awesome- and then we decided to put a cheese-it as a "science experiment".... note putting bread in a small, enclosed area that contains a moist gel is not a good idea. Colony number 2- (Psychedelic Blue Lunar Craft 2)..... We ordered ants from this vendor. All but 1 were dead when they arrived. I couldn't kill him... so now he lays on top of the small piece of carrot that was in the ant tube in his Psychedelic Ant Mansion.... I am thinking about dropping down some anti-depressents and liquor to cope with the isolation...

No survivors past 2 weeks - BUT cool when they were living
Many ants were dead when they were retrieved from our mailbox. We followed the instructions and placed all ants into their farm. Within in a couple days several more ants were dead. After a week only a few ants remained alive and at two weeks they were all dead. It did take a few days for them to arrive and maybe being in a small test tube bottle inside an envelope and sitting in who knows what kind of conditions may have been too much for them. It is possible that the days of transit could have been the problem. We will probably order again in the fall and see if we have better luck then since the temperatures will be better (summer heat in Texas is bad). While they were living they were very cool to watch and my grandson enjoyed watching them tunnel and move about.

Great beginner ants, but not a true colony without a queen
Came in 2 tubes, 25 ants in each, in one shipment. 1 tube had 100% survival rate, while the other had about 45%. Not sure why the ratio was so different between the two. The weather did drop below the recommend shipping temperature, but the shipping time was MUCH longer than I anticipated for live ants. Also important to note, you do not get a queen and this company does not sell queens. Meaning, this colony has a limited lifespan and introducing a queen bought from another USDA certified seller has its challenges. This may be perfect for children who lose interest in a few months. Personally, I will be buying from another company after these little guys' lifespan comes to an end. One thing that could have become a problem if not noticed early was the tubes outside diameter is smaller than the hole to pot the ants in the ant farm I bought, enough so that all the ants would have happily crawled out rather than into the farm. A few wraps with electrical tape at the end of the tubes solved this easily, but still something to nota as this is the company amazon pairs as "frequently bought together". I guess that falls into the ease of assembly and design category for rating live ants, lol! Fun for kids and adults alike.

Dead ants
Item arrived quickly, however, only roughly 10 of the ants were alive(even tho I made sure to order when the temp was appropriate). As of this morning, less than 24 hours later, we are down to 4. Don't waste your money. Find somewhere local to get ants.
