how big is it when stuffed into its sack? if i had to take it backpacking this would be the wrong bag? i want something that is thick, for padding

THIS IS NOT A BACKPACKING BAG!!! I bought it for backpacking, and it will never, ever work for that, unless you have lots of space to spare. I kept it to use as a two-person sleeping bag for regular trips. I carefully rolled it as small as it will go and put it in the stuff sack before measuring it for you: 1'7" tall, and 1' diameter. That's 19" tall and 12" diameter. In metric, that's about 48.25cm tall and 30.48cm diameter. If these numbers seem big, that's because they are.

is the bag easy to wash in a home washing machine? is it sturdy enough for multiple washes?

Do not wash in standard washer!!! I read the answers to this exact question and decided to give my home washer a try.

In short: I broke my washer! (Top loading, no agitator. 8 years old.) I'm pretty sure it put too much stress on the motor.

Honestly, I consider it my fault since the bag filled the basin so completely that water couldn't even get in. I should have had the common sense to realize that was a dumb idea.

It's a terrific sleeping bag for car camping in the cold. Huge and cozy.

Just Google for "wash comforter near me." There are places that have good, clean commercial size washers. (I was skeeved out thinking about using a laundromat washer, but that $6 and a Google search would have saved me $400!!!

No.  They are not designed that way, the corners are too sharp and they don't come in reverse zippered pairs.  However, if you are not overly large people, one bag should be big enough for both of you!  These bags are big and warm and inexpensive.
