REOTEMP Super Duty Compost Thermometer with Fast Response - Fahrenheit and Celsius (36 Inch Stem), Made in The USA

We have always purchased ReoTemp thermometers for our compost program. Quality product, reasonable price and last for several years in the right hands. Unfortunately we purchased this thermometer this month and it arrived with the stem separated from the head and the needle rattling around inside the dial. The box was beat up and there was no packing inside, just a small cardboard box covering the head. Returned it and got another one...this time the box was in better shape, little cardboard box was on the head and the stem was still attached but the needle was off the dial again. Returned the second one today and intend to purchase the Heavy Duty model instead of the Super. They definitely have issues with packaging them properly, perhaps they also have an issue with the Super model.

This product arrived correctly calibrated. Instructions are clearly written. Stem is particularly strong and allows user to feed the thermometer deeply into compost even piercing through leaves and many foodstuffs. In general I find a composting thermometer useful in monitoring the composting process.

I ordered one of these and used it very carefully for 6 months for our small on-farm composting operation. We process about 15 tons of compost a year, mostly finely textured straw mixed with animal manure.Having used compost thermometers for over 30 years, I was very careful and I was the only one on the farm allowed to place or move the thermometer.After about 6 months of perfect performance, it stopped working. I called REOTEMP and paid for return shipping.After no follow-up from the company, I had to contact to find out what was going on.I was instructed that because there was a very slight (and I mean slight) bend of perhaps 2 or 3 degrees, the unit was ruined and cannot be reliably fixed.There are stem guards for sale on the reotemp website (for an additional $160 on top of the $169 purchase price) which is suggested for 'the most rugged of users'. This hardly describes my operation where I place the thermometer for a month or more at a time.Regardless, I am very disappointed with the product considering its price and also with the company's poor response (pay to fix it but it will probably just break again or buy another one).I usually try to buy American because of the poor quality of Chinese products. Shoot...if its just going to break anyways, might as well buy Chinese!Sad.
