No Frills Pack - Challenging to Fill
I had to keep reminding myself that I only paid a little over $14, so I really tried to work with this pack.I am in the middle of a move and all my good hydration packs are at the old place and will not arrive for a couple weeks, so I needed something to tide me over. I am using this for my warm Texas morning runs. It is an okay pack with a number of quirks. The chest strap has limited adjustment and is too low for me, but I am making it work. Filling up the bladder is a challenge as the opening is not hard plastic, so it gives and is hard to hold onto it without getting water everywhere. If you have a double sink, fill it on one side and attempt to put the cap on it on the dry side of the sink. I filled the bladder and with the cap on (another pair of hands would have been nice) was able to get it into the bag only to discover it was dripping from the bottom. I couldn't tell while it was dripping in the sink, because at that point it was all a wet mess. This tube connected to the bottom of the bladder screws in place and was not on tight. Keep in mind, you have to take the cap off of the bladder in order to push the opening through the bag to get the bladder out. Which means you have to empty most of the water to take the bladder out.Even after I fixed the leak it did not work properly. I took the bag back out, re-positioned it in the bag, and managed to put it back in the pack without losing all the water in the bladder. This was all about a 45 minute adventure. I am glad I messed with it the night before and not the morning of.The bite valve is a standard straight valve and you can open and close the valve. There isn't anywhere to clamp the tubing, so you have to be creative. I cross it in front of me and feed it through the opposite D ring. I do intervals when I run, so during the walk portion I drink and it works for me. If you used this bag for continuous running it may get annoying having to open the valve each time. There is a cap on the tube that could use as a clamp so to speak if you looped it through on of the D rings, but that would be too much of a hassle during my runs. Someone hiking and not drinking as often might use this feature. One nice thing is that there is a pocket in back that goes against your back that you can put an ice pack in to keep you cool and the water cool. I use the pliable ice packs which work nicely. There isn't any storage on this pack. You could put something in the fore-mentioned pocket, but since it is next to your back, you would not want anything hard or lumpy and bumpy. This pack is working in the pinch that I am in. I will have to keep it due to me using it, but I am pretty sure I am going to dry it out when I get my good packs and it will sit unused. Maybe I will be able to give it to someone who will want to have the same adventure with the pack that I am having. I do think if I had a second pair of hands available whenever I needed them, this pack would be easier to work with.
