Vaideology: Basic Music Theory for Guitar Players | Guitar Instruction by Steve Vai | Includes Practical Exercises, Scales, and Diagrams | Full-Color Guitar Educational Songbook Review: Vaideology - Amazing book, great tips and knowledge. Truly an inspiring take on an educational book. Steve Vai doesn't miss Review: Complete, concise, and useful - There are a lot of books on music theory on the market, even ones that have a special take on their application to guitar. Steve does a great job of stuffing a ton of essential theory into less than 100 pages that should make most academics jealous. His explanations are what you'd expect from a practitioner. In additon, I really liked that he provides a lot of useful exercises about how to go beyond either the academic knowledge OR focus on shapes of scales and chords to shift the focus into the experiential domain. Some people may scoff at his descriptions, thinking that they are too fluffy or "New Age" to be practical, but this is something that they'd be very wrong about. I use many of the techniques that he describes with my students and can report that they do indeed work. This is a book that you not only need to read, but need to do the exercises over and over again. The good part is that they're not complex exercises and they're fun! Take Steve's advice: Do the exercises and spend time with it, don't just do the minimum and rush to get to the next part. This is well worth a lot more than it's cover price.

Reviewers Didn't Read...
Last sentence in book: "this book is far from being comprehensive in regard to music theory, although it should give you enough to chew on for a while...the Internet is a virtually infinite information highway for exploring this stuff--deep enough to give you a harmonic hernia." Vai is a genius, virtuoso guitarist who has not written a tome, but a manual for unlocking the neck of the guitar, which I see as the key point of mastering guitar. I can figure out the piano keyboard, but the guitar has been a mysterious device to me, although I have owned guitars for most of my adult life and I am quite old. This book, in the first few pages, explained to me what I will need to do to be able to understand the guitar neck. This makes it an invaluable addition to guitar books in general. Anyone who says it is not comprehensive didn't do any basic reading. The intro says to read it cover to cover twice before starting to learn any of the exercises. Had that occurred the 'it isn't comprehensive' reviews would not exist.

Great content
So far I find this book intensely technical as a intermediate player but that is what I am looking for so I am enjoying it as much as it pains me. The physical quality of the book itself is poor. I’m not going change my review as I like the content but I’ve had the book for a month and it’s falling apart. The printer did you no favors. This should be a lay flat binding or a wire binding with a synthetic tear proof paper. Imho :)

It will improve your overall knowledge of basic and advanced music theory
Well laid out, from beginners to advanced level. Some learning curves until you become familiar with notations, symbols, & music theory terminology. Steve Vai done a good job of putting it into somewhat of a basic understanding considering he is a musically advanced genius. Highly recommend this book to all genres of guitar players...

He knows what he’s talking about
Probably the best instruction on guitar and ramping up I’ve seen in a while by someone who doesn’t teach as their primary field.

An incredible resource from the Maestro himself. Music theory is patiently and skillfully explained; an invaluable asset for any guitarist serious about getting to grips with the basics and beyond. Beautifully illustrated too.

While the book is slim and covers basic music theory, its underlying philosophy and graphics make it worthwhile.
