Running with the Devil: The True Story Of The Atf's Infiltration Of The Hells Angels

Another Great Read
This is one of those books that I couldn't put down. The author didn't just infiltrate the infamous Hells Angels, but many other 1% biker gangs as well. All of these 1% biker gangs present themselves to be friendly, by doing charity runs such as the "Toys for Toys" run, but this book dives deeper into the underworld of drug running and gun running to other illegal activities. This book is a must read If are into this subject matter

Read Hell's Angel by Sonny Barger first
The reasoning behind the title of my review is that, you do not want to read Dobyns's "No Angel" due to its very one sided. Sonny Barger's book tells his story from childhood and the culmination of him being in the Hell's Angels out of Oakland.Throughout "Running with the Devil," there were some slow parts but when you get to specific areas, you can feel your heart racing and your minding wondering what the scenes looked like. Also you will feel that "Bird" and "Beef" had some problems dealing with eachother and stemmed mostly because Bird wanted to keep going. Towards the end surrounding "Patching In," Dobyns states that is has never been able patching in as a Hell's Angel but getting in as deep as they could. Ever so often in the book the author states how Bird started to relate to some of the Angels, which is somewhat understandable being that he had to get so close. There were so many ways that the ATF screwed up, not of the UA's but the agency itself!!! That reason alone is why Dobyns writes is own book. Which is next on my list...Nightster36

Excellent Read
I'm the first to admit that I'm not a fan of true crime but the subject and the setting of Running with the Devil made it a must read for me. From the first page to the last, the fast paced writing kept me reading. The information gleaned from interviews of those actually involved with the operation (unlike so many other books covering the same subject) added depth and tension so often missing in true crime. The actions of the ATF agents gave the plot twists than the most engaging fiction. Highly recommended!

Ugh. What a drag!
This book reads like a lawyer wrote it for some court documents. It is brutal to read. The book is all over the place. It's often incoherent and so hard to follow. This is not fun reading, especially if you appreciate proper grammar. This book has so many gramatical mistakes, it's pathetic. Did she even employ an editor? Not sure.Since I have the Kindle version, I cannot tell you what page these occur on, but I will give you the Kindle "Location" of them so you can see for yourself if this should have been published this way. Here's a few choice grammar gems as well as some extra "insight" into the book at no additional charge:219: "Hot sun beat down on Bird's face, drained him." This is the complete sentence. I'm not leaving out the word "The" at the beginning--it's not there in the text.227: Author repeats for the eight time in approximately 10 pages that the undercover guys don't have experience riding bikes. OK, I get it already, please, please get on with it. It doesn't add to the emotional build up to say the same thing over and over. I know as a writer you need to drag out the suspense, but PLEASE find another way to do it, not by regurgitating the beaten dead horse meat.251: "Rudy gave a whoop as they cruised into the hundreds of motorcycles already in the rally campground. Blend. Right. Bird and his gang eased in behind Rudy." HUH? No paragraph separation, no sense. Blend. Right. Huh? I think I see what the author was trying to say. The undercovers were supposed to blend in and act cool, but what a weak way of saying it. In fact it's so weak, I'm not sure this was even the intention. I'm just going with my gut here.251: "Beef's order resounded in Bird's head like gunshot." Ok, I'm just getting tired of these wordy analogies that seem to only be there to add pages to the book's lack of real content. Like gunshot? How cute.328: My eighth grade English teacher would cringe at this complete paragraph: "Much to the protests of their wives." That's it--the ENTIRE paragraph. Not a huge deal, but it should have gone in the last paragraph with a long dash after the word. It's annoying to see another paragraph that's not even a complete sentence. It distracts from the reading because you're like, Ok, did I just misread the above paragraph or is the author just doing her "thing" again?378: "Beef knew Bird too well, knew Bird was just daring enough to risk an excursion in Mexico." Nice one. Hint, it's a pronoun. While you're at it, a semi-colon would have been preferred.MORE TO COME AS I READ MORE

An OK book about a dumb operation
This book is yet another rehash of the ATF's "infiltration" of the Hell's Angels. The operation resulted in a few arrests and even fewer convictions. Almost all of the charges against the Angels were eventually dropped. Although this book has a better narrative of the "infiltration" than the previously released "Angels of Death", there is little new information here.If you are looking for the excitement of "Under and Alone", you won't get it with this book. These agents seem like clowns when compared to William Queen and his infiltration of the Mongol Motorcycle Club. The author of "Running with the Devil" seems quite talented, unfortunately she did not have good subject matter with this story.

Average
The book is easy to read and give's you an overview of the biker world. But it's certainly not the best I've read on this subject. For a more gripping storie on undercover infiltration of motorcycle gangs, I would recommend Under and Alone about infiltration into the Mongols.
