From School Library Journal Grade 3-8-- This delightful book gives clear, step-by-step instructions for making dozens of plasticine sculptures and bas-reliefs. Reid systematically demonstrates how to combine several basic shapes into increasingly complex creations. Unique to this book are directions for what amounts to painting pictures with plasticine. The technique involves spreading thin layers of well-softened plasticine over flat and solid shapes, and then adding flattened figures to create two- and three-dimensional scenes. The written instructions are effectively illustrated with attractive drawings and photographs. Useful modeling tips are offered along with information on sources, storage, and color mixing. Other modeling books for children are far less detailed, and describe the use of potter's clay rather than plasticine. This excellent offering is a craft rather than an art book. Reid gives directions for making things; she does not suggest exercises for exploring the nature of this particular modeling medium. A logical, attractive layout; many specific instructions; and a sense of fun make this an appealing book. --Cynthia Bishop, Onondaga County Public Library, Syracuse, N.Y.Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc. This would have been a better book if there had been actual photos of the art..not black and white drawings.
I was disappointed in the black and white pictures.

Excellent introductory book to Plasticine Art
This children's book is filled with great ideas for plasticine play to create a magical plasticine world. It covers bugs, animals, birds, beasts, people, cars and a whole bunch of other ideas such as furniture, props, boats and monsters. Barbara Reid is an award winning illustrator and she even shows how to do her "paint a picture" technique. This book is an inspiration (pity the pictures are black and white). My son (age 7) built a scene to create snow-capped mountains, a volcanic mountain with trees, a dinosaur and a lake! It turned out great (with some help from mom) and he was so proud. I took a photo to send to the grandparents! The instructions are step-by-step which really makes it easy to replicate and use your imagination to create anything you can think of. With this book and plasticine, you can immediately start modelling your own beautiful creations.

Fun, Fun, Fun!
I have used this book over and over and over again! It was very helpful during my high school years in art class. I still find it useful today (I'm a clay artist). It teaches the simple fun ways of creating clever designs with plasterseen. GREAT FOR KIDS learning the art of making creatures big and small with clay.
