After working mainly in theatre he landed smaller parts in several different film productions. His first big breakthrough came in 2000 with the film TOGETHER by Lukas Moodysson. The movie reached great international success and Nyqvist won a Best Actor Award at the Gijon International Film Festival. He went on to play leading parts in award-winning movies such as THE GUY IN THE GRAVE NEXT DOOR (2002) d by Kjell Sundvall for which he won a Guldbagge Award (Sweden s equivalent of the Os) for Best Actor for his performance, AS IT IS IN HEAVEN (2004), by Kay Pollak, DAY AND NIGHT (2004), by Simon Staho and SUDDENLY (2006) by Johan Brisinger. The cast from DAY AND NIGHT won a Silver Hugo Award for Best Ensemble Acting at the 2004 Chicago International Film Festival.
