Review: So Far, So Good - I just purchased this AC unit 10 days ago and have had it set up for around 5 days. So far it's working great. It wasn't too difficult to set up. Took around 10-15 minutes in total. It cools the room better than two 8,000BTU Honeywell units I had previously working in the same room. It can be a little noisy when it kicks in, but honestly not that bad, and often it's pretty quiet. I like that it comes with a remote and a cover. I was a little surprised they recommended changing the filter every two months. That seems a little excessive unless you have the unit in a place with a lot of dust. The unit is fairly large, so expect that it will take up some space. It also works much better if you have both the intake and exhaust hoses hooked up and vented out of the window. I will say, the plastic slider that you can adjust for the window size was too large for the width of my window, so I had to trim about 2-3 inches off of it. Not a big deal, but if you don't have the tools to do that, it could be an issue. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but again, it's only been 5 days. I'll have to update my review if there are issues in the future.
Review: So far...Great.. - Update: Now that I've had this for more than a month, I want to set something right. My first review mentions the compressor not activating unless it I set the A/C unit 10 or more degrees lower than the room temp. That was true, however, It turns out that there was a cold air draft hitting the bottom of the unit, tricking the thermostat in to thinking that the room was colder than it actually was. so that was no fault of the A/C unit. I have since corrected that issue and now the unit is spot on accurate. I have a weather station beside the A/C and it confirms that whatever temperature I set the air conditioner to, it keeps the room exactly that temp. I now like this unit more than ever, as the rest of my house can reach 85°-90°, whichever room I have this in, stays as cool as I can tolerate. So, to summarize, I love this unit and absolutely recommend to anyone who needs a portable unit that this is a great option. If the need should arise for another in the future, I will not hesitate to purchase another Whynter Portable Air Conditioner. I've only had this for 3 days but so far it is working wonderfully for my needs. I bought it for my bedroom that is only about 175 square ft. I have central A.C. but it doesn't work very well especially on days >85 degrees. It was simple and quick to install the hoses in the window and it comes with everything one needs for basic installation. The air gets really cold and keeps the room at a comfortable temperature, A little lower than what is considered perfect room temp as I like it cooler on scorching days. A couple things I have learned that may help others are: 1) The vent on top doesn't do anything as far as aiming the air because there is about a 1-2inch gap in front of it. I know that it's like that so when the vent is down, the air can still blow out but it lets all of the air out of that gap and none really blows through the vent. To fix this, I filled that gap with weather stripping and it works perfectly. 2) Since there is a 5° cushion as explained in the manual, to keep my room at 70° - 71° requires me to set the A/C thermostat to 64° - 65° otherwise the compressor won't turn on until my room is really hot to me. and yes, I know that is more than 5° but I've been trying to get the optimal temp and settings for my comfort and have noticed that according to my digital thermometer that the compressor will not activate a lot of the times until my room temp is around 73 -74° and The A/C is set to 64-65°, so it's more like a 9-10° cushion. Finally, the quick start paper that explains how to run the hoses specifically states that to attach the end connectors to the hoses, you must turn clockwise but inside the manual, the exact same diagrams and explanation says to turn counter clockwise. The quick start guide is wrong, you must turn counter clockwise. None of the aforementioned things are what I consider problems just little things I've learned in a couple days and the A/C unit functions well and keeps me cool. Considering the cost, if it lasts several seasons, I will stay happy with my purchase and will definitely recommend. Should anything go wrong, I will update my review.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it shut off when it reaches a set temperature?**
A: Unfortunately the fan turns off when it reaches the set temperature on 2020 or new models.

I have been using these AC units for years, just purchased a new one and not happy the fan turns off with the AC condenser. I use these in my room 365 days a year and came up with a workaround. I set the temp to 61 an hour or 2 before bed. Then set the AC unit to fan to run when I go to bed. I will be looking for alternatives ASAP.

**Q: how is the water removed?**
A: If draining becomes an ongoing problem, get a 4500 sq/ft dehumidifier WITH PUMP! (I CAN'T STRESS "WITH PUMP" ENOUGH!) My dehumidifier is clear down the hallway and it still dehumidifiers the entire house making any air conditioners operate much more efficiently. The PUMP kicks on about every 16 hours and pumps the 4 GALLONS of collected water right into my bathroom sink (or tub.) The A/C still removes humidity, but NOT NEAR enough to have to manually drain it.

**Q: Hello, is this the correct replacement filter? http://amzn.to/2rR9vrS**
A: The replacement carbon filter for this model is ARC-CF-14S.https://www.amazon.com/Whynter-Activated-Replacement-Conditioner-ARC-CF-14S/dp/B0048ELACQ/ref=pd_bxgy_201_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0048ELACQ&pd_rd_r=13EYPNKM27WSJRPYPZFB&pd_rd_w=YmOoE&pd_rd_wg=ptz6A&psc=1&refRID=13EYPNKM27WSJRPYPZFBOur Consumer Support Team is available Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM PST at 1-866-WHYNTER (1-866-949-6837) and at customer.service@whynter.com should you have additional questions.

**Q: Do you know if they sell a hose window kit for this for a sliding to the side window?**
A: My window is too big for the window kit that came with this so i bought a 8 inch board from home depot and cut holes in it for the two hoses (I used the end caps to trace the holes). I painted it and then used a foam seal strip along the sides so heat couldn't seep in on the sides. It works really well

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Big, Loud, and Surprisingly Impressive
*by T***M on May 24, 2026*

I bought this unit because our home AC decided to take an unscheduled vacation, and I needed something to keep the master bedroom livable while we sort things out. I have to admit, this thing impressed me. It cooled our master bedroom and bathroom in under two hours, which honestly felt like some kind of wizardry considering the heat outside. The cooling performance is absolutely the star of the show. If your priority is “make this room cold and make it cold NOW,” this unit delivers. That said, I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because this thing is not exactly subtle. It’s big. Like “small roommate who only communicates through fan noise” big. And yes, it’s loud. Not jet-engine loud, but definitely “you will raise the TV volume a few clicks” loud. For a permanent bedroom setup, it’s a bit too bulky for my taste. But for my future use in the garage woodworking shop? It’s going to be perfect. In fact, once it’s surrounded by saws and power tools, it may finally feel like it’s among its people. Overall: excellent cooling power, easy setup, and absolutely worth it if performance matters more than silence or compact size.
