Review: I love this brand of Midnight seed - Wow! The new coating helps a lot with germination. Three years ago I used another brand of Midnight when I completely restored my entire lawn and didn't have great germination. I tried this brand and had better luck. This year, I over-seeded bare spots after having to repair many areas due to sewer and downspout repairs in my yard. I ended up over-seeding the entire lawn in late August. The coating helps a lot! Yes, many complain the coating reduces the amount of seed you actually get, but I prefer the coated seeds, like the name brand expensive bluegrass seed that's coated seed for years now. I get better results with coated seed. Protects seed viability? Who knows. Yes it costs more, but the end results are what matters. Furthermore, many folks forget to use starter fertilizer. They forget to continue to use starter after the seed is slowly growing too. I do NOT! It's a must! I like to use the name brand starter in bare spots because it is finer and dissipates better in the ground, especially when only keeping seed moist. When over-seeding my established lawn, I use whatever, but still prefer the finer granular name brand starter fertilizer. Also keeping the seed moist and cooled off during high heat is a must too. We are in a moderate drought where I live in Ohio, but I've been watering. Many neighbors are shocked at my lawn and are asking me what to do now that it's fall. I told them what I do and the products I use. I've had 2 delivery gentleman ask me what I'm using after dropping off my packages. I'm mowing 2x per week, while most are still not mowing at all and haven't mowed in weeks. I highly recommend this product! This seed does take a bit to establish, like most bluegrass seed, so patience and dedication to the future is required. If over-seeding late fall/winter, I recommend not broadcasting crabgrass prevention until the last moment possible in spring. This seed has overwintered well for me here in Ohio. It's a gorgeous dark green color that's fairly disease resistant and drought tolerant considering bluegrass seed.
Review: Great seed. Quick customer service response by seller to resolve an issue unrelated to seed germination results. - Great seed. It sprouted faster than I anticipated and is starting to fill in bare areas in the soil. Following up at the 3 week since planted mark, the young sprouts are almost ready to be mowed over without me taking care to prevent damage in those areas. I anticipated roughly a 30 day germination rate because bluegrass is typically slow to germinate. A lot of people forget that and negatively review KBG seed because of that. To help me determine when I should start seeing sprouts in the lawn, I placed some seeds in two small, clear plastic pot drains, covered with dirt, watered and placed on my kitchen window sill. The seeds sprouted faster in the pot drains than they did in my front lawn but they are now taking root and growing well. It's at a point where I can now shift my attention to the sides and rear of the property. Even got a text from a neighbor yesterday complimenting me on how well the front lawn is looking. The goal is to have the midnight KBG take over all areas with red fescue and mix in with the other KBG currently present. Again, I'm quite happy with the results thus far. This is an edit to my original rating. The original was still 5 stars based purely on my experience with the seed. I just ran into a problem trying to order additional bags from the seller. I contacted the seller and they responded in less than 24 hours, even though the SLA through desertcart is a standard 48 hours. That's a positive mark right there to beat the SLA in such a fashion. The seller also provided detailed reasons for why the challenge existed and offered a resolution. Because of these actions, I feel it necessary to publicly note the positive experience. I'll continue to do business with this seller.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Are the seeds ceritifed sod qaulity?**
A: No Matt, unfortunately the seeds are not. Seed Super Store in Buffalo New York has certified Midnight, but it is quite expensive.

**Q: Is this a fine leaf and is it self spredding?**
A: This is a very fine leaf. Not a lot of support to walk on, but on the flip side, if you are mulching, a fine blade will break down and return to the soil quicker. KBG spreads via rhizomes which are underground roots designed for spreading the plant laterally. This root shoots out an inch or so and shoots up a new daughter plant, then spreads a little more and repeats. Each seed planted should do this. One seed will not spread but so far, so if you come back down the road with a thatch rake or mechanical tool that will break this root, the daughter plant should then become a mother plant and start spreading again. Once established for a few months, you can put down a pre-emergent herbicide like Prodiamine or something else which will prevent 99% of the annual weeds that pop up in lawns, which is the majority of weeds you have in lawns. The other weeds you can hand pull, including the root, or get a small envelope moistener with a sponge on one end and fill it with Glyphosate and apply directly to the perineal plant you need to kill. Once dead, this weed will decompose and leave a dead spot. Since the pre-emergent will prevent new plants, the rhizomes should spread into this area and fill in the void over time. Just avoid this seed like the plague if you have pets. I put this seed down as a test and it is gorgeous and I love it, but my 500 sq. ft. test in a 10,000 sq. ft. back yard failed miserably due to pet urine. with 10,000 sq. ft. of lawn, it was not like they only urinated in that 500 sq. ft. patch, and there are so many dead spots it looks like black patches on a Dalmatian. If you don't have pets or plan on getting pets, then you're fine. Otherwise, choose a different type of seed that is highly tolerant of pet urine. I live in the transition zone and found Zoysia grass to work very well for my situation.

**Q: Does this have good tread wear if there is a lot of traffic on it...say from a very active dog?**
A: Yes, but you have try to keep the dog off the grass until it gets established. When I first planted the grass it came up great but you have to make sure your soil is right (fertilized) and get well established. Once it's established you will love it!

**Q: Can anyone tell me the seed to area ratio? I've never planted grass before and have no idea how much I'd need for my yard less than an acre.**
A: Our lawn is 1200 sq ft. We established by hand weeding including undesirable grass, successive aerations & topdressings & overseeding. We used 10# the first year, 5# the next few years in 2 applications, and now a 5# bag lasts about 3 years. We continue to hand weed & overseed to maintain but it's not much at all. A neglected lawn is a headache, a small welltended lawn is beautiful. Lots and lots and lots of lime for this grass. Lots of deep water & cool springs and autumns. Think White Cliffs of Dover. This grass isn't a good choice for much of the USA, check your zone and rainfall before committing.

### ⭐ Snake oil weeds with seed...
*by B***C on July 19, 2025*

I've bought this seed 3 times. The first time I thought I did something wrong when prepping everything. I removed 20 yards of soil, brought in 32 yards of good soil and seeded, watered etc. Grass took forever to come in and was very patchy, filled with weeds and just a horrible product that asks for a premium. I've re did it another time and bought a third time to fill in patchy areas. One of the worst products I've ever used and I've been in landscaping business since 2011. I would not recommend this product.
