## Description

We love using 'Nanno' it grows very fast (you can observe density changes within 2 hours with our Secchi Sticks), performs well for experiments for students, and does not die unless you really want it to. It is a terrific model organism for research.

Review: Great - Amazing. High Quality. I used it to make more. I made a lot.
Review: Fast growing algae - All i wanted was a nice little hobby and now i have so much algae, it cultured well once i got the light and nutrient mix figured out, took 2 weeks to get it from 500ml to 60 gallons (not fully dense but suited for tank size)

## Features

- ALGAE CULTURE: In our labs in San Diego we grow algae and zooplankton cultures for most habitats on our planet (and perhaps Mars!) We carry freshwater, brackish, marine, and extremophile cultures of algae; They grow to exhibit colorful pigments of red (phycoerythrin), orange (carotenoids), brown (fucoxanthin), blue green (phycocyanin), and our favorite->green (chlorophyll); Our algae strains have been selected because they are grown well in bottles and flasks
- SCIENCE PROJECT: Teachers, parents, and students - grow algae easily and get great results for inquiry-based projects; Because algae grow FAST experiments take a fraction of the time as land-plants (and algae is cooler!) Great experiments: toxicology, light quality, environmental changes, algae blooms; Blog posts detail science-fair winners and other projects; Students have sent our algae into SPACE THREE TIMES (would have been four, but the rocket exploded;; we still love you Space X;)
- WHICH ONE TO PICK: Choose from culture, culture kit, farming kits, algae beads or Brainy Briny's; All items come with our Algae Culture Manual; CULTURE is simply cells of algae; CULTURE KIT is the culture, salts, nutrients, and a flask (in most kits); FARMING KIT is used to grow batches of algae to harvest biomass; ALGAE BEADS are concentrated cells in a gel used for classrooms; Brainy Briny's are a zooplankton and algae culture kit; Instructional videos at algaeresearchsupply;com

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Hi laura, my question is if this culture is safe to eat (fda?) after harvesting. or is this also for research purpose?**
A: Hi Tim,Spirulina is a safe organism to eat. It is how it is raised and prepared that can become problematic. If it is grown in water with a pH around 10, the probability of problems is lessened. Also cleaning the algae after harvest is advised, and drying helps to kill pathogens. Finally, I must state (as my wife is a lawyer), eating anything you grow at home, be it beans, corn, or spirulina; how you grow it effects the safety of the product. Therefore, we offer no guarantee, warrantee, or prediction of safety if you choose to consume this product or feed it to animals. That said, I have not had any one tell me that they have had any problems.

**Q: Spirulina platensis, Spirulina maxima, Spirulina fusiformis? What is it?**
A: To the best of my knowledge they are all the same species. But technically, S. Platenais.

**Q: Without adding nutrients, how much can this algae grow in 5 days?**
A: It will contain enough nutrients in the biomass itself (luxury uptake) to likely double. The media it ships with will have enough to more than double as well.

**Q: how much solution will this make?**
A: You question is a bit vague I think, but I will answer to the best I can.Infinite if done properly, and continue to build your nutrient solution to feed the algae culture as you harvest.I was able to fill 5 gallons and used less than half of the liter, and it was enough to grow very well. So I will be harvesting and adding more nutrient solution to keep it going. I imagine it's at least enough to start 3x five-gallon tanks, but if you plan on growing it out, you will gain an infinite supply if you take care of it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fast growing algae
*by B***N on December 23, 2025*

All i wanted was a nice little hobby and now i have so much algae, it cultured well once i got the light and nutrient mix figured out, took 2 weeks to get it from 500ml to 60 gallons (not fully dense but suited for tank size)

### ⭐ Contaminated Culture
*by A***Y on February 15, 2026*

Before placing the spirulina into your tank, place couple drops under a microscope. I was sent a bottle of chlorella with spirulina mixed, it ruined my entire bioreactor set up. After 3 weeks of growth, I was able to get 1% spirulina. The rest was Chlorella. If you want to just grow algae just for fun, this would be what you need. If you want separate algae strains, go somewhere else.
