Hope this is helpful, Warning don't use bleach to clean the pipes. **Q: Can this be used with a waste disposal unit?** A: Don't see why not. **Q: How much water kept in (it looks as if the inside should be horiz not vertical like the pic)?** A: They work as well horizontal as vertical, as long as you observe the correct direction of flow, as clearly marked. They retain nothing, the non return element is a very soft silicon elastomer duck bill. They do not like being “plunged” as the duck bill turns inside out and stays that way. However it could have been excellent if in the instruction they informed you that before installation make sure the membrane (non return valve) is straight inside the unit. Mine was folded as a consequence I had to drain the bath (as it was not draining) and I poked a blunt tool through the membrane to open it, then I re installed it.
