My guess is that your estimation of 50 gallons is low (even for a small pond) but even if 100 gallons, you will probably overheat and kill your fish. My first one many years ago lasted only one year. The 2nd one has been working for almost 11 years! i loved the light so i can know its on---the deaths when a de-icer fails can be horrifying if you take too long to notice the heater failure and have no back-up device. The only signs of wear it's showing is some cloudiness in the plastic covering the light. Ordered a 2nd one just to have on hand b/c i cannot imagine the current one going much longer--but it might surprise me. I can give them warm water in the freezing cold. ### ⭐ Didn't Work When Needed Most *by C***A on January 23, 2020* We dug a pond in early October and to prepare for the winter, we decided to buy the Laguna PowerHeat De-Icer. We previously had the TetraPond De-icer in our old home, but left it behind when we moved. When we were having 30 degree weather in December, we would see the red light turn on and have peace of mind that is was working. Fast forward to January, where we arrived in single digits, this de-icer failed miserably. We had a dedicated 20A outlet for this and the pond filter, never having any issues up until this point with running them both. We woke up one day to our pond completely frozen over because this thing blew the GFCI circuit. As per the instructions, we plugged it into another GFCI to troubleshoot, and a short 10 seconds later, you could hear the outlet reset. In an attempt for a quick solution, we ordered the TetraPond De-icer and got it same day. After using a pot of hot water to melt a holt in the ice, we dropped the TetraPond in, and it has been working ever since.
