The package was scratched, worn and wrinkled, with various images and words on the label almost invisible from wear. If it says it's organic somewhere, it's not visible to the naked eye. When I shook the bag, it sounded like a bag of popcorn. I could feel all the hardened pieces of clumped powder before I even opened it. When I looked inside, it looked just like how I'd imagined from feeling the bag, and there is really nothing that makes me think this product is even relatively new or fresh or recently packaged. I wouldn't be surprised if this was packaged a couple years ago, although of course I cannot be sure of the exact date. The outside packaging shows it's been tossed around quite a bit, the powder doesn't smell or taste potent or fresh, and it's hardened and clumped up the way powder can get, after being exposed to enough air for enough time. The powder smells exactly like really old soy sauce, and that just doesn't seem right to me.I was really excited for this shiitake extract to arrive, but I find this packet of powder a little hard to swallow. I only take a 1/4 tsp before bed and gives me a very relaxing happy calm feeling as I drift off into sleep. The flavor is very unami, so it is a very savory type of taste. I sometimes add it to a cup of my bone broth, since it makes the broth taste better.As with all medicinal mushrooms, always start low (dose) and slow (increasing dosage) to adjust your body to heal. Shiitake is very potent, so taking too much at once might trigger a strong detox (which is good), but after the detox subsides you will feel incredible! So that's why I go low and slow unless your dealing with some heavy aliment.Shiitake is very good at keeping you healthy and teaches your immune system how to fight. It is an awesome medicinal mushroom. I also grow my own Shiitake on oak logs, but it feels good to have such a potent extract powder for easy consumption.
