These are made of birchwood, not nearly as expensive as teak, and are a pleasure to use. Reasonably priced and highly recommended. They were not oiled and I think that is because some commented on not wanting the oil on theirs. I rubbed olive oil on them and le them sit for the oil to be absorbed. I prefer that to mineral oil. Because this wood has a very fine grain it is a little raised in 1 spot but the oil will take care of it. No splinters.
