Maud Lovelace was only a couple of years older than my father. These stories about the early 1900s give a good feeling for that period. Just think about buying lunch; sandwich, milk, and dessert, for 15 cents and going to the library alone for the whole day. The first four books will be a birthday gift to my 11 year old granddaughter. At Christmas she will get the other 6 stories. When a young friend from another country now living in Minneapolis had a baby girl I reread the book and wanted to send it to her so her child would understand something about the life and history of other little girls who had proceeded her. Although somewhat outdated it still speaks to the concerns of little girls and the needs and hopes they have in their friendships. Shaped by their families their place in this world also plays a strong role in creating and fostering their characteristics and friendship. It will take a bright and curious chld to read and love this book, but she will be rewarded a sense of rootedness and belonging.
