But if the battery was put in with the positive (+) end against the spring, that raised end may have snagged the spring when trying to get the battery out. The maximum length of the shaft is less than one inch. The manufacturer lists the maximum dial thickness as 1/2 inch. While you could push that a bit, a inch is way beyond what it can do. There are other units out there with longer shafts. Your other option would be to route out the back of the clock to accept this as an insert into the clock. I did that with a butcher block clock that I built out of 2x2s. the clock mechanism set into the wood so all you saw was the butcher block wood.
