The surface coating is dull not shiny and glass-like Correlle. I remember the first time I dropped a Correlle soup dish I held my breath as they are so glass-like I waited to hear the shatter. It didn't. If you clack the bowls together they don't sound glass-like, maybe the Chinese have come up with a new material with melamine and plastic mixed together? She always want it some of this kind of soup spoon. One flaw for my wife is that she want the curve at the hanging end to be longer. So if she is using it in a thicker bowl it would still hang and not slip. Other than that hanging part being a little longer she would be completely satisfy. After replacing countless glass bowls after they'd been broken by 4 clumsy kids, I was looking forward to having something that would last. At first, they were great! Microwave and dishwasher safe, stylish. Then I started pulling them out of the dishwasher and finding cracks in them. They weren't dropped on the floor or anything. Just washed.
