The bowl is made of rigid plastic and the top has a catch to fix it to the bowl so that when you are spinning it the inner basket does not slip on the rachet like my old one did. Good looking and large enough for a salad for 4 people. Lid can be fitted into bowl to reduce height when storing. Can't find any downside to this spinner but can understand how the rigid plastic bowl could break if dropped on hard floor as some have mentioned.
