It must be silicone in this one that resists stains. 2) As to the design and structure of this silicone mat, this mat is sturdy and there are little "feet" every so many inches on the underside, so it keeps the mat surface off of or rather, raised above the bottom of the sink which prevents debris from getting stuck under the mat, allows for air circulation making for easy cleaning and more sanitary. 3) I also appreciate its heat resistance properties. I know longer have to remove the mat when I pour hot water down the drain, AND I can set a hot pot directly on to this in the sink. 4) As to the color, it's a dull medium grey, but that's how silicone is...it has a dull finish.
