The old one survived a bit of abuse and several years use. It looks like they improved overall build quality. The rear control panel label seems more secure(old one had to be taped down after a year. They battery compartment seal is no longer an o-ring that can be lost it's more secure. Sound quality is about the same. If you're using this for music know it won't be the same quality as a party speaker. It's not supposed to be. These are great for sporting events, parades, etc I use mine as a loudspeaker for events in my Grinch themed car and it works great!
