## Questions & Answers

**Q: How is this brand compared to Petadolex which costs a lot more per capsule? Wondering if it's better.**
A: I took Petadolex too for quite a while and yes it is expensive. I have better luck with Ice packs, Maxalt, Reglan and Toradol injections which in the E.R. calls the migraine cocktail. It worked nearly EVERY time in the e.r. so I got my neurologist to just prescribe the meds to me to take at home to avoid 2-3 visits to the e.r. MONTHLY!!!! There are occassions where I need a little more so I get a steroid pack (methylprednisolone) which is supposed to work by taking so many pills each day for 7 days straight. I find that taking 3 w/my cocktail helps along with 2 magnesium pills. It sounds like a lot of stuff but I've LITERALLY been a migraine sufferer since age 7 so 33 years and I've been prescribed EVERYTHING under the sun. I also get botox injections every 3 months. But I'm now looking into that new med called Aimovig to see if it will help cur down so I'm not taking like 7 pills and then an injection to get rid of it 100%. I know that my migraines make me feel like giving up bcuz the pain is so intense so I understand how others feel with them. Sight and sound hurt. My lights are always off. My fan is on and my air is on high if its summer. If its winter my fan is on and my window is open. Once I get chills and fall asleep I feel sooo much better...
Sorry for the novel but I get it and petadolex isnt worth the price AT ALL..
Hopefully since you posted this you've found relief.

**Q: Does this help with spring allergy? Itchy eyes, itchy throat & sneezing? Thanks.**
A: It helps a bit with itchy eyes and throat but I use allergy eye drops in conjunction with the butterbur. It is AWESOME job at reducing breathing issues (congestion, mucus, asthma, wheezing) and sinus headaches. I've been taking it for years and I highly recommend. However everyone is different and butterbur could cause an allergic reaction if you are allergic to daisies, other flowers. Read up on side effects before you order. One comment : Swanson Vitamins used to sell the same 60 capsules for $4.39. It is no longer available. When I asked Swanson why they stopped, they said they could no longer get it. So the low price option is NOW brand but I hope it becomes available in the future through another generic offering. Charging $15 for 60 capsules is price gouging if you ask me.

**Q: Does this work for cat allergies?**
A: I don't have cat allergies but since moving to the south, Ive had allergies from the extreme pollen. If it could help me with that, I wouldn't be surprised if it helped with cat allergies. I can now drive with the window open.

**Q: Is this product free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids?**
A: Despite butterbur’s potential efficacy, doubts are increasing about the long-term safety given of the risk of liver damage and the lack of an actively regulated preparation. Due to the mounting concerns, the American Headache Society is currently evaluating a position statement cautioning against its use.

Butterbur extract must be manufactured carefully and consistently to remove PAs.1 Butterbur has been shown to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), a toxic substance that causes hepatoxicity in humans and has been shown to be mutagenic and carcinogenic in animal studies.

Sometimes you can't trust labelling. In a recent review, 7 of the 21 butterbur products (33%) contained PAs. In addition, only 7 (33%) showed an amount of petasins consistent with each product’s labeling. Of note in this study, Petadolex contained petasins in the amount disclosed on the product labeling with no detectable PAs in the sample provided.

Petadolex was previously registered by the German health authority BfArM, which regulates drugs, medical devices, and herbal supplements in Germany, and was the only butterbur compound to be approved by a governmental regulatory body. Although Petadolex is still commercially available, it has since lost this approval in 2009 and is now unavailable in Germany. Reportedly this was due to a change in the manufacturing process, occurring prior to the above studies, for which BfArm required reregistration as a new drug and which the company has not completed.7,8 In addition, due to reports of human hepatoxicity associated with the use of butterbur-containing compounds, all butterbur supplements have since been banned in Switzerland.

(BTW Butterbur and Feverfew can interact with medications processed in the liver, like Propranolol, blood thinners or Pantaloc so check with pharmacy)
