## Overview

The LifeStraw Personal is a compact, ultralight water filter designed for hiking, camping, travel, and emergency use. It removes 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites, and microplastics down to 1 micron, providing up to 4,000 liters (1,000 gallons) of safe drinking water without batteries or chemicals. Certified by NSF and EPA standards, it’s a durable, easy-to-use tool that fits in any pack and supports global clean water initiatives with every purchase.

## Description

LifeStraw, the original ultralight backpacking and travel-friendly “straw” water filter, makes contaminated water safe to drink and helps to prevent most waterborne diseases by protecting against bacteria (like E.coli), parasites (like Giardia and Cryptosporidium), microplastics, and silt, sand, and cloudiness. Drink directly from lakes, rivers and streams or fill a container to use your LifeStraw on the go. The LifeStraw can provide up to 5 years of safe drinking water, with proper use and maintenance, and is rigorously tested to meet drinking water protocols established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and NSF International/ANSI. Your purchase has impact. For every LifeStraw product purchased, a school child in need receives safe water for an entire school year.

Review: Essential, Reliable Water Filtration for Outdoor Adventures - We have found the LifeStraw Personal Water Purifier to be a must-have piece of gear for hiking, camping, travel, and emergency preparedness. Its lightweight, compact design makes it easy to pack, and it’s simple to use—just uncap both ends, dip the straw into your water source, and sip. We appreciate how quickly it provides clean, fresh-tasting water without the need for batteries, chemicals, or complicated setup. Key Benefits: Effective Filtration: Removes 99.999999% of bacteria and 99.999% of parasites and microplastics. The filter’s 0.2-micron membrane exceeds EPA standards for water safety. Long-lasting: Capable of filtering up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters), which is enough for one person’s hydration for years of adventures. No Maintenance Hassle: Requires no batteries, power, or pumping—just sip, and you’re done. Blowing air through after use helps keep the filter clean. Lightweight and Durable: Weighs less than 2oz and is built to withstand rugged use, making it effortless to add to any pack. Peace of Mind: Perfect for emergency kits, travel in areas with questionable water quality, or backcountry explorations where clean water isn’t guaranteed. Helpful Tips for Use: Prime Before First Use: Let the bottom end sit in water for about 20 seconds, then take several strong sips to start the flow. Regular Cleaning: After each use, blow air back through the straw to clear out residual water and help prevent clogging. Storage: Keep caps on both ends when not in use, and store the LifeStraw in a cool, dry place. For long-term storage, rinse and follow care directions to maintain performance. Know Its Limits: While the LifeStraw is excellent at removing bacteria and protozoa, it does not remove viruses or chemicals. For heavily polluted or viral-risk areas, consider supplementing with tablets. Our Experience: We’ve used it on backcountry hikes and international trips. The water tasted clean every time, and we never worried about running out when sources were available. It’s incredibly reassuring to know there’s a quick, reliable way to get safe water right from streams, rivers, or puddles without carrying heavy bottles. One Design Note: Since it’s a straw, you need to drink straight from the water source or fill a separate container to use it—a minor tradeoff for the portability and simplicity. Overall Recommendation: We highly recommend the LifeStraw Personal Water Purifier for anyone who spends time outdoors or wants peace of mind in an emergency kit. It’s affordable, dependable, and does exactly what it promises: delivers safe, clean drinking water wherever you go

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Odd question, but its on my mind. If i pee into a bowl, and use the filter on that, will it taste like water or pee?**
A: Salt and urea, along with various other substances your body is trying to eliminate, will remain in the filtered urine so it will still taste like pee (whatever that tastes like.) In a desperate survival situation, many people have resorted to drinking their urine. That is ok up to a point. As your dehydration increases, your urine will become increasingly concentrated (dark and even viscous.) It's best to drink urine early in your survival situation since it will be less concentrated and consequently less toxic. That way you are conserving what water you do have longer. Of course, most people will completely exhaust their water supply before they resort to drinking urine. However, drinking highly concentrated urine is probably worse than not drinking it at all. Also, urine is actually sterile inside your bladder but not as it flows through your urethra. Happy drinking!

**Q: I am a bit confused... Does the shelf life of 5 years begin after first use? Or 5 years even if unused? Does it have a manufactured date on it? If we don't use them do we need to replace them every 5 years?**
A: 5 years from manufacture date which is supposed to be printed on the packaging . Last ones I bought from Amazon were expired but the manufacture and expiration date had been removed from the packaging . I contacted lifestraw and according to the batch #,they mistakenly left, they were 7 years out of date . If you go to your local caming or sporting goods store you will see they clearly DO come with a manufacture, expiration date and batch # . Remember you get what you pay for and trying to save a few dollars purchasing from sellers that arent exactly honest and sold you a unuseable, expired product isnt a good deal in the end. If it doesnt have a date you can find on the packaging then its most likely been removed and either out of date or close to .

**Q: Can you use it with sea water the LifeStraw**
A: No, the Life Straw does not remove salt from ocean water. You can buy desalinators on Amazon for around $250- $300 that can make drinkable water from salt water. Unfortunately, Life Straws cannot remove salt or dangerous chemicals from contaminated water.

**Q: It says UP TO 1000 liters, since you're not measuring your water and it depends on how bad the water is, how do you know when it has reached its limt?**
A: Take a 1 liter jar, fill it with water, now draw out the water using the straw a mouthful at a time. Count how many mouthfuls you get from a liter of water. Multiply. that by 1,000. Men, women and children will have different figures.
