I installed the unit rather high (attached to chimney) to make sure I was getting accurate wind speeds I also tried using rechargeable batteries but they seemed to discharge rather quickly (app every 4 months). I came up with the idea to keep the rechargeable batteries but connect a small 5 volt solar panel. This setup works perfect. That was app 2 years ago and I haven't replaced a battery yet. Hopefully this helps. **Q: How close does the sender unit need to be to the display?** A: According to the manufacturer the transmitting unit can be up to 300 feet from the reciever. I have my unit on a 12 ft pole approximately 70 feet from the transmitter (outside unit),and it works great, I'm very pleased with this product.. **Q: How much wind history can this store?** A: 48 hours in "replay" mode(30 minute intervals) and also today's high, month's high and all time high in "weather select" mode. **Q: how many days of average wind speed will this record?** A: Not days, average wind speed up to 180 minutes. I like the color display, very easy to read. We bought the black with silver trim. Set up was fast and easy. The only thing that is not correct on this is the weather in the bottom middle panel. Since this is in our Arizona winter home and humidity is low and temps are hotter, I think it may confuse the unit as to what it is really doing outside some days. I like the wind speed indicator. It shows wind speeds and gusts and records them for the last 30 minutes showing the strongest wind speed. We have this sitting on our end table with the included stand in the living room and the bright display is always just a peek away. Large easy to read numbers, which is great for us.
