My dog was neutered when he turned 11 and because of his age he underwent a complete cardiac evaluation before the surgery. Then 4 weeks later he developed a heart murmur and suffered a stroke. In hindsight, he should never have been put through the surgery, because the loss of testosterone immediately led to health complications which I now know are well known side effects of neuter surgery in male canines. All the same, the damage was already done and my vet recommended getting him started on Coenzyme Q10 and it was a good call. For as long as he gets his one tablet per day, he has no cough and shows no signs of hard breathing or fluid build-up. Moreover, it has kept the soft tissue in his mouth healthy and he has a fresh breath as well.
