I cried a lot in the last third of the story, but what a story it is about how people who are terminally ill can show great positivity in the face of great adversity, something I know is true as a relative fought but ultimately lost their battle with cancer. The changes to the characters seemed very believable as the story progressed - certainly makes you wonder what might have been. I'll be reading it again and also bought the anime off the back of this which was also a good watch, though parts of the book are missing (as is usually the case!)
