Even though as a child myself I went to school in the projecfs of louisville, KY and was one of few kids of my race there. I was still able to go home to the suburbs at night so while i do understand what its like to be a minority in some ways I cant fully understand it all. I like to use this book to identify to the young men that education is key and that that is not just coming from me its coming from many other respected black people in our society, with very straight forward language. This book helps to squash some of the victim mentality and machismo issues that we have faced with the kids. I think it is a great resource along with a few others. I will be reading parts of it out loud with our newest young man that gets here tomorrow and is avaiable for adoption. I hope this book helps him see that what matters most is not the gucci belt he put on his christmas list but the brain he has in his head and the confidence in his worth as a compassionate and caring human. Now, granted, I'm not a young man, but nonetheless, it was quite helpful; I cried a time or two reading. The slang, although a bit outdated in some ways, does add a personable factor, as intended... My 13yo nephew is going through a similar struggle, so I gifted him the book and he loves it, says it is helping him to learn and grow as a young man.
