I just put mine on a set of cinder blocks so you don't have to bend down all day while cooking, or you can put it on a picnic table as long as it is not plastic. Thanks.** A: I would go with the gold. The silvers ventilation system can become clogged causing charcoal to stop burning. Silver good for quick stuff that takes less than 30 minutes. Gold seems like a better bet. Some people modify silver with extra holes or putting a tuna can with holes in bottom, but I think Gold is a better bet. The hibachi style is also good for small grill on small porch. **Q: how does it compare to the Smokey Joe Gold grill** A: Here's what I put in my review: "The reviews for the gold suggested that the silver was a better option for two reasons: the ash catcher tray and the fact that the holes were on the bottom rather than the side. The Gold cannot have ashes removed unless the coals are out and the charcoal rack can be removed. After using the silver, I question what good the ash catcher tray is. How do you clean it out while charcoals remain lit or unlit in the grill? With a tiny little brush or shovel? It's cute.As for the holes on the bottom. This is all well and good until your charcoal crumbles and the ashes clog the holes. And if you have the lid on, the charcoals go out. And you wonder why your hamburgers are not cooked. Having the holes on the side would keep air flow, regardless of crumbling charcoals.Third, the Gold has a handle, which would make this easier to move. After the fact, I discovered that Cook's Illustrated has reviewed portable grills, and they included the Gold in their review, but not the silver." **Q: Can you put woods chips in it and use it like a smoker?** A: You can add chips to Smokey Joe and make enough smoke to soot up some chicken, but it is not a smoker. It doesn't burn well at smoker temps (200 degrees) and the heat is not indirect. That being said, I had the best smoked pork shoulder at The Back Eddy, when chef and author Chris Schlesinger owned it. The shoulders were smoked on large Weber grills, out behind the kitchen. The larger grills allow for indirect cooking at low temps. Wrap wood chips in aluminum foil and place on the coals for a slow burn. I think Chris described the process in one of his excellent books on grilling.
