Crown of Midnight: 2 (Throne of Glass) : Maas, Sarah J: desertcart.co.uk: Books

Review: It will leave readers gasping for breath! - Crown of Midnight was an action-packed, fast-paced and expertly-plotted sequel that will leave readers gasping for breath one moment and with tears pouring down their face the next. It not only will leave you wanting more, it will make you want to be a part of the vivid world Maas has created. I loved book one, and had no idea how Maas would be able to improve for the sequel, but her writing blew me away. As for Celaena Sardothien, Adarlan's Assassin and now the King's Champion, you got to have a more in-depth understanding of her character. From hunting down traitors of the Adarlan's throne for the King, to her love for chocolate cake, Celaena just grows throughout this novel. Yes, she's still arrogant and flirtatious, still walks with undeniable swagger in her steps but you also see her fall in love and deliberate how people feel towards her. While Celaena yields Damaris, the sacred sword that belonged to the first King of Adarlan, as her weapon, Maas' is clearly words. When I opened the first page of Crown of Midnight, I became completely engrossed into the world she had created once again. So in-grossed in fact, I hardly put this book down until I had finished reading it. The plotting was just incredible as well as the understanding of the world and it's history. There's an effortless quality of being able to trick the reader, in a way where a plot twist is thrown at you when you're least expecting it. Just like Celaena's victims, as a fair share of blood is spilled during the novel, you never see it coming. The writing is elegant, beautiful and descriptive - I can't believe I'm saying this is even stronger than that in Throne of Glass. Plot-wise, as Celaena can't bare to kill for the crown, she is putting those who she loves at risk. As Celaena continues to fake deaths, knowing the King could find out at any moment, she leans that there is something even deadlier taking place in the Castle. Once again, it is left to Celaena to discover what it is and try to solve it, which allows the tension to build as she learns more. As for the characters, there was this perfect contrast of good-and-bad, the heroes and the villains. Celaena does clearly favour one man in particular during this novel, and the romance for me was breath-taking. Chaol and Dorian's friendship was something I learnt a lot more about, as well as where their loyalties lie. Nehemia: the kind-hearted Ellylle Princess and Celaena's closet friend, was continuing to fight for the slaves in Calaculla while someone plots against her. There's also a talking door-knob and a witch with iron teeth - what more could you want from a sequel? The only comment I could make in a negative way would be the fact, with so much going on, at the end I became confused. I did in a way feel like I had missed something but, when you tie it all together, the next book is going to be ground-breaking! Words can't describe how much I loved this - you should read it for yourself to find out. Immediately! 4.5 Stars Fans of Throne of Glass will be gripped to this read, and will love getting to know more about the characters they fell in love with in book one.
Review: Really enjoyed this one. - This is one of those reviews that is incredibly difficult for me to write. Why? Because I so badly wanted to love Crown of Midnight. I wanted it to be one of my top ten books of 2013, just as Throne of Glass was one of my top ten of 2012, but it just didn’t happen that way for me. And, more than anything, my disappointment in my own expectations has made it really hard to see the true merits of the story. Now, thinking back on the story, I can certainly see how much I did actually enjoy it and while I didn’t fall in love with it like I had hoped, I still really liked it and I know that, that feeling is one that will never go away. Thus, it is now that I can say with some certainty that Crown of Midnight is a great read and one that is worth the read. The problem I had with this book that stopped me from truly enjoying it was the slow beginning. For me, the first part of the story just seemed to drag on without much of anything actually happening. I could see afterwards in the second part why it was necessary, but it just took too long for me to really get into the story. I kept putting the book down and was able to walk away from it for long periods of time without thinking about it again which is never a good sign. But, despite that, the writing style was amazing and I know that others have loved the first part as much as the second part so I’m aware it could just have been me or the mood that I was in. The second part, on the other hand, was exactly what I had been hoping for when I started reading Crown of Midnight. It was fast-paced, full of action, mystery, and complicated, twisting plots that just had me turning the page again and again. This part of the book pulled the story together for me and made me fall in love with it all over again. In the first book, Celaena is shown as a well rounded character who is fierce and powerful and this is only shown further in this book. It shows, also, how human she is and how flawed she is from all that has happened to her in her life. Celaena is a character who has a soul, who doesn’t just take everything in her stride that is thrust her way but gets hurt and damaged and struggles to deal with her emotions, but that when time needs, she is strong and capable, powerful and intensely fierce. A warrier when she needs to be, a human being when she doesn’t, and I absolutely adore that about her character and I love that Sarah J. Maas doesn’t just push away her emotions. In this book you see a lot more to Chaol and Damian as well and I really enjoyed that about it. Just like Celaena, both of these characters are shown as having flaws and weaknesses while also being strong and powerful. Chaol will do everything he can to protect Celaena but he also has a job to do, he’s caring and a true gentlemen when he wants to be but also a fierce protector when he needs to be and I think that makes his character so brilliant. Dorian on the otherhand is such a sweethart. He has a lot on his shoulders, a lot going through his mind and he struggles to deal with some of it but he always takes it in his stride, never allowing his emotions to ruin his decisions. He is strong in a different way to Celaena and Chaol and I just absolutely adore that about him. Dorian, is by far, my favourite character in the book and I really look forward to seeing more of him in the next book. There is no denying that Sarah J. Maas is an incredibly talented writer. Her prose is so well-written that you can just imagine it happening in front of you. Her descriptions are perfect and she just manages to get characters and dialogue so amazing. It is hard not to feel like she is a truly great writer and knows how to put words onto a page that make you keep wanting to read on. While I may have struggled with the first part of this book, it was the way it was written and the amazing characters hidden within that kept me going. If it had been any other writer, there is a high chance that I would have put the book down and completely walked away from it, but because Sarah J. Maas still managed to keep me turning the pages when not much was really going on, it shows how brilliant the writing style was. It is because of this that I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series, and while I wish there will be more action and fast-paced scenes, I know that even if there are slow moments again, I won’t give up on reading the words written. So, all in all, this book was one that I did really enjoy. It may have been a slow start but eventually it picked up and kept me turning the page quickly. It held a captivating story within it and really forced me to keep reading until I got to the very last word on the page. While it didn’t live up to my complete expectations, it was still a book that I enjoyed reading, one that I would happily re-read and one that got me completely and totally excited for the next book in the series. The thing to remember, the thing that I need to keep reminding myself, is that our own expectations and the opinions of others, should never shape our own thoughts and feelings about the books we read. It should always just be about the experience of reading and I know for a fact that I was incredibly glad that I picked up this book as it led to me experience a whole bout of emotions, and essentially, took me to an entirely new and magnificent world. If you’ve read Throne of Glass, then you should definitely give this book a read. And if you haven’t, I can only recommend that you definitely read Throne of Glass straight away!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A worthy sequel!
*by D***N on 8 July 2015*

Crown of Midnight was one of my most anticipated reads but I tried to read it when it was first released but I had too much trouble remembering what had happened in Throne of Glass. So I put Crown of Midnight down and it’s only because I recently listened to Throne of Glass on audio that I’ve been able to finally dig in to this beauty of a book. I’m glad I did the re-read though because I definitely forgot a lot of important details. Celeana Sardothien is the royal assassin to the King of Adarlan after she won the position where she much serve the King for next several year but will eventually gain her freedom. Now she must carry out the King’s deadly tasks and take down the people that threaten his position as King. But Celeana being Celeana – head strong, determined and feisty she will never follow the King and tries to stop his plans but by doing so, she risks all she loves. But her journey is far from over and the deeper she unravels the mysteries of the castle, the more she discovers about magic and the importance of her role. Admittedly Crown of Midnight does have a slow start but because I’m so invested in the story and characters, it didn’t bother me. It was like catching up with old friends and I loved every minute of it. It’s once you hit the halfway mark that things seriously take a turn and the story becomes impossible to put down. Exciting, thrilling and so engaging this story doesn’t have a dull moment and the author really starts weaving in all the answers to the questions you’ve collected throughout the story. And the answers, the answers will simply blow you away! I wasn’t prepared for them but I’m in awe of the master piece that is this book and it shows you how talented Sarah J. Maas is! Is there anyone more badass than Celeana? Seriously this woman is amazing! Is there anything she can’t do? She’s become stronger and stronger with every turn of the series and has continued to grow and become someone to admire with her determination and courage. It’s hard not to love her! But there’s definitely more to Celeana than meets the eye and this is the book where we really discover her secrets and it left me reeling. And the story wouldn’t be complete without the two leading guys – Dorian and Chaol – whom I love for both completely different reasons. Crown of Midnight was definitely worth the wait but that ending, gosh, I’m so glad I have Heir of Fire at hand so I don’t have to wait to see what happens next. Amazing! Well done Sarah J. Maas for delivering a worthy sequel!
