I like the cones, although they are getting hard to find. I worked up a swatch today and had no problems with splitting or pilling. I do find that cone yarn seems to be a bit thinner than the label claims. I have to move down a needle size to get the right gauge. This is not brand specific, just most yarns that come on cones. This brand was my first experience with cotton, many years ago and I love working with it to this day.
