It is a standard type motor. It is NOT a variable speed pump, it is a 2 speed pump. When running full speed it can get hot enough to fry an egg. A true variable speed pump runs warm unless it is maxed out. I have been in the pool industry for 40 years so believe me when I say, any non variable speed pumps running on high speed get very hot. False advertising is used when calling this pump “variable”. It is a 2 speed pump. **Q: What size are the fittings? Outside, not inside the pipe as I can see it can take 2 ways to attach. I can't seem to find a union that fits.** A: It's a 2 inch union, we picked ours up at Lowe's, the part# on the label shows 511-14-2-2B and barcode # 8-2063397633-2 **Q: how and what controls the speed change? can I set the time for each speed to run(duration)?** A: If you have install it at the end where there is a round cap thats where you install the cables, there is a switch for speed, 1 or 2. So depends how big is your pool is the speed you decide. In my case I have a pretty big pool in speed 1 it won't work. So we put it in 2 and it works great. Now if you have a timer like me you only get to choose the time for the speed you choose. It will not work as setting for both speed.
