When I got the old wires out of the conduit, I could see the failure points, and decided to use better wire, better (waterproof) connections and GearIT wire wrap over the connection. GearIT makes great products, so I used their wire and shrink tube (this is an unsolicited review, by the way). I also used their pin connectors and banana plugs for my indoor stereo connections.
