It holds your hand through piecing each of the pictured quilts. It even picks your fabrics for you.There is a brief section on piecing basics, with folding and cutting instructions, how/why to match edges neatly, the importance of accurate seam allowance (actually consistent is more important than accurate, but never mind), etc....The one thing I noticed that isn't even touched on is how to connect strips end-to-end, so I imagine many readers making a straight seam instead of diagonal and then wondering why it ends up visually jarring and sometimes lumpy in the quilt.She does mention the problems of working with cross-grain strips, and sewing bias edges; and there's a full page with clear graphics on how to bind with mitered corners. Although she does touch on the quilting itself, you'll very likely need another book for that. (That or a long-arm quilter.)But as to the individual quilts...There's not a new idea or pattern or trick or tip in here. If you have ANY other quilt book, you very likely have all the information in this book, and more. There are only eight block patterns, ranging from a traditional log cabin and a strip-pieced version of the "Waste Not" block to a somewhat modern pattern of varying-length boxes.(Incidentally there isn't any confusion about the directions "continuing" anywhere: when you find a quilt you want to try, just flip immediately to the "continued" page. The directions start over again from the beginning, so you don't need to refer back to the color picture page.)Really, the only thing about this book that sets it apart is that she has preselected the jellyrolls and tells you exactly which to buy to duplicate her quilts. If you want to precisely duplicate a pictured quilt you like (which is not necessarily a bad place for a beginner to start), this could be the book for you.But if you're looking for new ideas for how to use the jelly rolls of your choice, they aren't in here. If you're looking for new quilt block variations or combinations, they aren't in here. If you're looking for color inspiration, it's probably not in here (I'd suggest any book by Kaffe Fassett).There's nothing here but clear and careful instructions on how to duplicate exactly these quilts. If that's what you want, this is probably worth the price.
