I've found batteries last longer when on a pulsing pattern than a steady pattern. -- which makes sense since they're "on" for only two thirds of the time. It also depends upon how many channels (pairs of electrodes) you use. Most times I only use one pair of electrodes -- to target one area. This seems to use half the amount of electricity, and so the batteries last twice as long. I take the left over 9 volt batteries from smoke detectors and use them. They still have enough "juice" left in them to power a tens unit for a long while.
