## Description

When growing catnip from seed, you’ll need to properly prepare the seeds. Catnip seeds are tough and need to be stratified or slightly damaged before they will sprout. This can be done by first placing the seeds in the freezer overnight and then placing the seeds in a bowl of water for 24 hours. This process will damage the seed coat and will make it much easier for the catnip seeds to sprout. After you have stratified the seeds, you can plant them indoors or outdoors. Thin them to one plant per 20 inches after the sprout.

Review: Extremely new to gardening, here! After just a week, exactly, these tiny little guys seemed to have sprouted overnight! I soaked some of them in water for 24 hours first, then wrapped them with a filter-like sleeve(that were bundled with another purchased item), slid them into a ziploc bag and put them in the freezer for another 24. Then resoaked them in warm water for ANOTHER 24 hours! Haha. Then, I think I wet the soil first before—quite tediously and messily—fighting with scraping the teeny tiny wet seeds into it. That took nearly 7 minutes!🤣 As a test, I sprinkled more seeds in straight from the pouch without soaking or freezing first, and spread all the seeds gently half an inch beneath the soil with light taking drags of my fingers. Possibly because I used a paper bowl, the soil literally stayed moist the entire week, so far, and still is a little. I also placed them a short distance from a window, so they have been receiving indirect light. The only downside for this “experiment” is those seeds were such a hassle and a half for me to get off my fingers and into the dirt, that they are completely scattered—so I’ve no idea which ones were stratified vs which ones weren’t!🤣 But hey! They’re growing, at least!!💪💪🌸🌸 I’ll update as they grow! UPDATE!: They we’re progressing slowly indoors, so I made the mistake of placing them outside in better sunlight to thrive. BAD IDEA!!!😭 They all died, and I don’t know why. No wild critter ate them; there wasn’t any fungus or anything strange on them. They had great sunlight and were watered when the dirt were dry, just like what I did indoors. What’s even stranger was I placed another pot outside, with seeds right out the bag in them—no soaking or stratification beforehand—and they sprouted in about less than a week, this time. They were doing lovely outside for an additional two or three weeks. Then, they started to wilt like the ones that had once been doing fine indoors did. Not a clue as to what went wrong! Welp, while it were a thrill watching these seedlings grow from a teeny tiny seed, I’d rather actually have some catnip, so I’ll likely lean more towards the starter plant route if I want to keep trying to grow some stronger ones!🤣 Tho, with all these leftover seeds, I may as well do something with em!

I put my seed packet in the freezer for 24 hours to stratify them. I don't know that it's necessary for these but recommended a lot of places and I can verify with some seed types it is a critical step. It's the time frame in this case that makes me skeptical. It's usually a way to simulate winter for seeds that require it and is done for months as a result. It doesn't hurt your chances in this case so why not right? Soaked them after freezing for 24 hours. No fancy procedure. I used a shallow glass container with a couple tsp. of water. Just enough to cover the seed. In 24 more hours the water had been soaked up or evaporates to where it was simply wet seed. They'll stick to everything when wet. I fished a few out on my finger and placed them on top of a Dixie cup with potting soil that had holes drilled in the bottom for drainage. On my usual heat mat and under a grow light in the cold frame and in a few days several had sprouted. Not a great germination rate but the seeds are so tiny. Guessing maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the ones planted sprouted. Should be plenty. I only attempted starting a small portion of the seeds in the packet for now and will attempt more later if it comes to that. Once the seedlings get planted should be a cake walk to get more.
