The pump shaft is an unknown material with what appears to be a ceramic coating that wears off fairly quickly exposing the base metal. I'm on my 3rd one of these for a hot water recirculating loop and they seem to last about 12-14 months in this setting. What has worn out the first two was the ferrite core at the base of the pump came lose from the shaft so it can't spin the impeller but instead just spin in the housing itself. Hope this helps.
