I turned to box dyes, but that isn't very healthy for your hair. So along came henna. I have dark brown to black hair, so I was very aware that I wasn't going to get a match without indigo, but I wasn't looking to dye my hair as much as just make my gray a little less conspicuous. Henna was great! My dark brown/black hair has an orangish/brownish tint to it, but only seen in the sunlight. My grays turned reddish/orange. I typically mix with some freshly cooled coffee and let develop overnight. I apply it in the morning, and since I work from home, I just let it do its work while I go about my day. As per most instructions, I only use conditioner after washing out all the henna on the first day. Then, in a day or two, I'll wash my hair with shampoo and condition. I've been told it continues to develop even after you wash it out, but I honestly don't see much of a difference. I just hope that the extra day or two before shampooing will, at least, make the color last longer. I process my hair enough without coloring that I wanted a more natural way of covering grays, and this works for me. I've been back and forth between salon, box dyes and henna, but I think I'll stick with henna now. It just feels more organic to me, and my hair doesn't have to suffer as much. I’ve used several but I had to come back to this one. My hair is bra strap length when stretched. The night before… I mixed one and half cups of this henna along with two tablespoons of amla powder (which protects your curl pattern), one tablespoon of slippery elm powder (just for providing slip for ease of application. I usually use aloe vera powder but ran out of it. Slippery elm was a great replacement.) and one heaping teaspoon of Himalayan salt (to ensure maximum dye absorption.) I mixed it all with exactly two cups of warm black tea (put 3 Lipton tea bags in 2 cups of hot water cover and steep till the water is cooled a bit.) This is the mixture I use with every brand. The day of… Shampoo your hair and apply the mixture in sections on damp (not soaking wet) hair. Cover with plastic wrap and then a plastic bag and let sit for 3hrs. (I let mine sit for 4hrs.) Rinse well. Then apply your indigo mixture if going for a black hair colour. (That review will be on this brand’s indigo powder). DO NOT SHAMPOO OR USE CONDITIONER AFTER RINSING! YOU’LL WASH OUT THE DYE! Some oils like coconut oil strip the dye so make sure to avoid anything containing that. I just applied flax gel. The dye continues its adhering process when rinsed and dried making it less likely to wash out during your next wash day (give your hair at least a week before washing). There will be dye transfer and some grains of the powders will be on your clothing/bedding/skin etc. after drying but it will all come out in your next wash day.
