Review: I had forgotten how good a Pup Named Scooby Doo was. I was born in 1991 and can remember watching this show all the time. I also remember telling people that I liked this more than the original Scooby Doo Where Are You. I am very much the kind of person that likes originals more than spin offs and remakes though, so as I got older I felt that I was "mistaken" in how highly I regarded a Pup Named Scooby Doo. Before I go forward, do I think it is better than the original Scooby Doo Where Are You? Not necessarily, however I would say for casual watching I may preferentially reach for a Pup Named Scooby Doo over the original. One thing I hate about remakes and spinoff series is that they typically try to reinvent the wheel. Think all the modern Scooby Doo remakes that stick to the same original Scooby Doo script. It is pretty boring to me and the new animation, voice actor changes just don't sit well with me, and I cannot sit through modern Scooby Doo shows. They also typically change the characters even if subtly to the point where I can't get past it and find myself thinking "the real (whoever) wouldn't be like that". Now think about a car tire(wheel), and now think about the wheel sets on a train. Both are round wheels, but you can't put a train's wheel set on a car and it drive down the road, and care tires won't support a train. The wheel gets adapted to suit 2 different thing. A Pup Named Scooby Doo is like that in my opinion, they didn't try to reinvent something that was already perfect, they adapted it to something different. For starters, I never felt like this was meant to feel like the original, the atmosphere was different, I thought that while characters were the "same" they were not meant to be copies of the original characters. Fred and Daphne especially are completely different personalities but utilized in a really good way. I would also like to mention that I cannot believe this is from the 1988. Typically I can tell when a show was made just by the way it is presented, dialog, etc. I would have put money that this was a mid 90s to even later 90s show. The animation is really good. The dialog and jokes are really good. The scenery/visual tech seems 90s. Even knowing it is from 88, I can't make myself place it in that era. Daphne's character and behavior reminds me so much of girls from the late 90s early 00s that I knew around that time(very Britney Spears' fanatic girls). The humor is really where this stands out though and honestly, I think my favorite character is Red Herring. I had forgotten about him until I first started watching and his "that's not very funny" is usually pretty funny, Fred's "there is only one person who could have done it... Red Herring" is good enough then you get Red responding in some way. Fred going on tangents about mole people, etc is hilarious. It is totally different from the original Scooby Doo. A Pup Named Scooby Doo was developed by Tom Ruegger which I didn't know until a few days ago and that really makes sense why the humor is as good as it is(he left to create Tiny Toons and then later Animaniacs). Had they tried to make this a close adaptation to the original Scooby Doo, I strongly believe it would have been a flop, but they made one great show by taking the bones and building something unique. The theme song and music within is really good as well.
