## Description

The Dwarf Cavendish banana is a widely grown and commercially important Cavendish cultivar. The name "Dwarf Cavendish" is in reference to the height of the pseudostem, not the fruit and can grow 5-8 ft tall. Young plants have maroon or purple blotches on their leaves but quickly lose them as they mature. It is one of the most commonly planted banana varieties from the Cavendish group, and the main source of commercial Cavendish bananas along with Grand Nain. Last of all, it has great disease resistance and can grow from Central to Southern States Zone 8-11. Most all edible plants grow well in Full Sun, a little shade won’t hurt. For starter plants I recommend growing in a 4 inch to 1 gallon pot to allow your plants to get a little bigger then then re-pot or plant. Banana Plants can be planted in most healthy soils with normal pH range 6.0-8. I recommend growing in an organic potting soil with the fertilizer and beneficials already mix in. Keep your soil moist, not not soaked and keep consistently watered. A key feature is the banana’s rhizomatous root system, which puts up new stalks each year. For good fruit production, it helps to limit the plant to three or four stalks that are different ages. The oldest and tallest one should be flowering and/or fruiting. The second one should be one-half to one-third the size of the first. And finally, there should be one or two young plants that are six inches to three feet tall.

Review: 5 Months Later: Big and Healthy Trees - I was not planning to make this review, but I had the picture taken yesterday and in the last 5 months, the plants grew very well. At first, I was about to do a return since these trees came a little late, and I was nervous that they would come to me stressed after being in a box for more days then expected. I was able to get them planted immediately and situated safely in a green house (USDA Zone 5b) heading into the Summer months. One of the starts went to a family member who put it on their kitchen counter and it failed to grow in 4 months. Pulling that start into my greenhouse instantly got it healthy and thriving. All 4 tree starts give a full new leaf every 3 to 10 days. The plants have had to be transplanted twice already (which is why I took the picture yesterday). I am always impressed how well these plants are growing. Future Buyers: I would highly recommend you have heat, sun, and humidity ready for these plants as I have now seen the difference between sibling plant starts establishing in both good and almost good environments. I am surprised how fast these grow. Be ready for transplanting and growth. What I am still not sure about: (little documentation about what to expect) - How will I pollinate the future banana bunch as it forms? - How large will the pot need to be so I can get a sucker to continue growth after the initial plant expires? Final thought: This is a great purchase. The plants are pretty hearty, and they all survived the somewhat concerning delays in shipping. They will need the attention that tropicals need to thrive. I would recommend misting with a spray bottle if your humidity is like mine (sub 30% and lower daily). I would buy again if I needed more of these guys. Cheers
Review: Beautiful Dwarf Banana Trees - Bright green and very healthy looking. I potted these in 12 inch pots with good soil fertilizer and nitrogen. got the right plant food balance and covered the top of the pot with wood compose It's been a week and they are in my laundry room under a plant because it's too cold on the patio. However these were exactly as advertised easy to plant and I am looking forward to a wonderful plant for the patio and a great harvest of bananas on 3 or 4 years. These are also perfect for planting in larger pots as they grow and are pruned. But best of all I can put then in the garage or the She Shed over the winter months. This was a good purchase.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is the fruit the mini bananas or the regular sized ones?**
A: You are buying the plants. Mine haven't fruited yet.

**Q: How far apart do you plant them in the ground?**
A: We planted ours about 2' apart. We did lose a couple of plants because we had a very severe cold that was not normal for Florida. Also, the ones that did survive grew lots and lots of pups so you will have plenty of plants. You should take those pups and transplant them so that your main banana plant will put all of its energy into growing bananas.

**Q: Does this plant produce bananas that you can eat?**
A: I have only had mine for a year. They are doing great and I hope they will. Even if they don't, they are beautiful plants.

**Q: Do these have the maroon markings on young leaves that denote the Dwarf Cavendish cultivar? I don't see any in the photos, so very hesitant to buy.**
A: There were no maroon markings. Mine flourished at first in the greenhouse then died off one by one. The leaves turned black around the edges. Save your money.
