Some time earlier we had placed one of the plants outside 'to get some sun,' long enough to contaminate it with a colony of gnats before we brought it back into the house.We lived with the damn gnats for weeks before coming up with the following nuclear option:1. Sterilizing freshly purchased potting soil by baking it in the oven for 30 minutes at 180 degrees F. (Search online for "How to bake soil to kill pathogens in dirt" for details.)2. Outside on our porch, removing and replacing soil in each planter and plant, taking care to protect the roots.3. Spraying Bayer Neem Oil (available on Amazon) thoroughly over the exposed roots and fresh potting soil.4. Cleaning each of the ceramic planters with a mild solution of bleach. (The dishes under the BOTTOM of the planters were literally black with dead fungus gnats.)5. Placing each of the freshly cleaned and repotted plants into large plastic bags, then quarantining them--while loosely covered--in our large pantry, the only place we'd not seen a fungus gnat.6. Thoroughly vacuuming carpets throughout the house.7. Hanging Hafer Dual Sticky Traps on windows where the gnats were known to fly to and land.The plan was to keep the plants secure until at least 24 hours after the last sighting of a gnat on a trap, since all it would take to repopulate the colony would be one pregnant gnat. We'd read online that the gnats live about two days, so perhaps three days of quarantine would be sufficient. The traps were our 'canary in the coal mine,' with fresh traps to replace the previous day's traps.Here are our findings:* Day One after the 'great purge' showed 15 to 20 gnats per trap.* Day Two showed about half that number per trap.* Day Three produced three to four gnats per trap.* Day Four on several windows were clear, with two gnats appearing on a trap in one window.* Day Five produced one gnat; the remaining traps were clear.* Day Six: no gnats showed up.* Day Seven: no gnats showed up.I should add that within the last day my spouse and I have each spotted a gnat fly around a window but not be caught. However, today (Day Seven), no gnats have showed up on the traps. A couple of things I DROPPED from the arsenal are "fossil earth" and a layer of pebbles on the top surface of the soil. These two things didn't work for us. More weapons in our arsenal are: hydrogen peroxide (seems to work well), and Bonide insecticide for houseplants (also seems to work well - I reviewed this item). Additional weapons are Gnatrol, which I got recently and haven't used yet; having good drainage in the soil of the houseplants; allowing the soil to dry between waterings; mixing perlite in the soil; and AVOIDING "moisture control" potting soil.MY ORIGINAL POST: These work very well for catching fungus gnats in the house. We're in a battle to try to get rid of the gnats. We catch many, many gnats. A couple of pointers - these yellow squares are very sticky, on both sides. I handle by the edges. They are packaged with squares of waxed paper between each yellow square.Another reviewer of this product suggested cutting the square in half, attaching the half-square to a popsicle stick or craft stick, and sticking that in the soil of the potted plant. Since fungus gnats reproduce in the soil of potted plants, and "hang out" around the plants, this makes sense. It seems to work well to catch them. The yellow squares may work better in places where they pick up the light - a window, or by a lamp. I have seen in several articles that the yellow does attract the flies. Another tip - I wrap the yellow squares I haven't used yet in waxed paper. It's easier than trying to slip the pack of squares back into the plastic bag they come in.These squares are part of the solution - an important weapon in the arsenal to fight the gnats. Other possible weapons are well-drained soil in your houseplants, "pot feet," "fossil earth," and a top layer of coarse sand on your houseplants. I am planning to try an insecticide. If you look up on the internet "how to get rid of fungus gnats" you'll get a lot of info. By the way if you think you have fruit flies, they might be fungus gnats. Hope this helps. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best way to get rid of gnats, read this.. *by C***R on Reviewed in the United States πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ on August 2, 2017* I have tried many methods to get rid of gnats (fruit flies) and I think I stumbled on the most effective. I use to just do the vinegar and soap method and I noticed a lot of gnats would crawl around the outside of the container and never go in. It worked to get some gnats but it took days and many makings of the vinegar and soap. After I got the yellow sticky paper sold here, I caught every little gnat in my house in just a few hours. Cut strips and arrange them COMPLETELY over the top rim of a glass or jar. I also used plastic wrap to make sure no sticky stuff got on the container and they have to crawl on the Yellow part of the trap. I placed sliced apple pieces from the core in the container. I also have apple cider vinegar in there but the decaying fruit seemed to attract them more. When they go to investigate the smell, they land on the strips. I thought I had 10-20 gnats in my house. As you can see by the pic I had many more (100-200). I found moving to a high spot in the kitchen worked best. Move it around every hour or so till you find a good spot. Hit helpful so everyone can see this method, it really did the job. No, I did not get this item for free or discount.
